victims of clergy sexiual abuse? One of my friends, a devout Catholic, believes that these people should not receive retribution, particularly years later. What do you think about this? NOTE: I am not taking a stand one way or the other.

from past times spent on the internet I have found out that my last name has come from Germany (Im German) I told my friends this and got the nickname 'Nazi' and then this past summer I found out that my blood grandmother is Jewish, some of my friends found this extremely funny when I told them, I wanna know how you react, tell me exactly what you visualized, thought and said when you read that first part

I was steered toward Christianity by my grandma, later I studied Wicca and Paganism, but I never felt connected to either like I thought I should be. I read the first half of the first Rig-Veda, I've read a little about ceremonial magick, and stuff like that, but the story's the same. Nothing has really clicked to make me say, "This is me." If there is a creator and s/he/it made a religion for me, it'll come my way, right? If no creator exists, I don't need to search painstakingly, right? What do you guys think? All opinions are welcome, but please be polite.

Are people really that ignorant? I received this as part of a response to a previous question of mine.

Atheists, by definition, do not believe. If they did, they would not be atheists. Why can't people understand? And why, after acting like this, do they claim atheists are rude and narrow-minded?

I've gone to church all my life, I've read the Bible umpteen times, I've prayed for something... Anything! I just wanted a reason to believe! I asked for ten years, for a touch, a confirmation, NOT A SIGN! I do not want a sign, but just a reason to believe! My friends say I do not need a reason, but I think that is just stupid! Who would do such a thing - believe in something just because someone tells you to?!?! Only a SUCKER would do that!
I tried to study more about Jesus, but couldn't find anything substantive about him in history, and found out about all the dozens of missing books left out of the Bible, and then you have the problems of evil and Hell and blasphemy and etc, etc..
I don't know what God could do to hide Himself any more. All my friends say to do this and that and I have done it all, humbled myself, denied myself, read certain scriptures, quiet myself, waited patiently, ceased from all manner of evil, prayed, fasted and really... Nothing! I quit!

Christians - what happens to a Jew, Muslim, Mormon, when they die?

Mormons - what happens to a Jew, Muslim, Christian, when they die?

Muslims - what happens to a Jew, Mormon, Christian, when they die?

Jews - what happens to a Muslim, Mormon, Christian, when they die?

You can also answer what happens to atheists when they die, and atheists can answer as well.

My mom talked to this very religious man the other night and he said that he talks to people that died in the ER...went to heaven or hell, and came back to life from the Doctors.

After they came back to life, they told him they went to heaven or hell and told him about it.

That's something very hard for me to believe...what do you think?

Is swearing very offensive to the majority of Mormons? It seems like I can't say anything around Mormons. I don't mean to offend anybody or anything, but that's the way that I talk. It's what I grew up around. I just get this feeling that some people want me to live in fantasy land where we find positive ways to express ourselves, which I'm for to an extent. It's ridiculous when someone is breathing down your neck about everything you say. Sorry to say this, but I wasn't raised in no fantasy land. I feel like I'm being looked down upon for using street slang when it's part of the environment I lived in.

The only cow in a small town in Poland stopped giving milk. The people did some research and found that they could buy a cow from Moscow for 2,000 rubles, or one from Minsk for 1,000 rubles. Being frugal, they bought the cow from Minsk.

The cow was wonderful. It produced lots of milk all the time, and the people were amazed and very happy. They decided to acquire a bull to mate with the cow and produce more cows like it. Then they would never have to worry about the milk supply again.

They bought a bull and put it in the pasture with their beloved cow. However, whenever the bull came close to the cow, the cow would move away. No matter what approach the bull tried, the cow would move away from the bull and he could not succeed in his quest.

The people were very upset and decided to ask their wise rabbi, what to do. They told the rabbi what was happening. "Whenever the bull approaches our cow, she moves away. If he approaches from the back, she moves forward.

When he approaches her from the front, she backs off. An approach from the side and she just walks away to the other side."

The rabbi thought about this for a minute and asked, "Did you buy this cow from Minsk?"

The people were dumbfounded, since they had never mentioned where they had gotten the cow. "You are truly a wise rabbi," they said.

"How did you know we got the cow from Minsk?"

The rabbi answered sadly, "My wife is from Minsk."

"Philosophers agreed long ago that it is fruitless for believers and atheists to argue with each other. This is because they interpret *everything* differently. In order to argue, there must be some common ground, so that one of the participants can say 'Aha! If you concede x, then you must also concede y!' Atheists and believers never find an x they can agree upon. The argument can never begin, because each sees *everything* from his own point of view" (98).

Thomas Cathcart and Danial Klein. "Plato and a Platypus"

I think it's a good point, but I don't agree that intelligent debate is impossible - just rare. What do you think?

Thinking of converting... this god stuff is just not working for me.

Looking at the society as a whole, what role do atheists fulfill when they are a small minority (such as the US)?

How does this role change in a strongly Non-Theistic society (such as much of northern Europe)?

Seriously, does anyone really think that God will send all of those who aren't of a certain religion to hell just because of that? And not take into consideration that all they've ever done is follow Him and His gospel? I don't think he would. What do you think?
