Do you feel embarrassed when you hear religious people claim that they've literally communicated with God, and that they've felt his presence and he's actually talked back? I find it so shocking that I feel sorry for them. I can't decide if I want to laugh or vomit. Your thoughts?

why do people say that abortion should be legal as it is because of rape, incest, or medical desease when these reasons account for 7% of abortions? Why is it illegal to "sell" your baby (allow someone to pay for your change of living expenses during your pregnancy in exchange for a garunteed adoption right), but perfectly legal to destroy that baby who has no say in the matter? I don't understand the logic... can someone please explain to me? Why can't we make abortion legal only to those who are indeed rape victims and incese victims and those with deseases that threaten mom or baby (even though I still don't agree with it at all) and have a government run program (since the churches are too self righteous and indignant to do it) to help this "buy a baby" idea?

To those of you who believe in the concept of sin (in any religion), I pose the following questions:

Do you believe that consuming animals is morally permissible?

Sin is not limited to things that we choose to do, but extends to things we choose NOT to do. If you consume animals, do you believe that it is still morally permissible by refusing to educate yourself about the barbaric practices of commercial farming?

I understand your position, if so. For most of my life I forced myself not to look, until one day I conceded. What I learned so greatly impacted my conscience that I had to immediately start making lifestyle changes. I don't adhere to any religion these days, but I still place ethical value on decisions. If I still chose to eat meat, I would be unable to consider myself anything but a monster.

Take note: I am not passing judgment on you. I've passed judgment on myself and I ask what prevents you from doing so.

Please consider Acts 13:48 when answering this question:

"When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed." (New International Version)

And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed. (King James Version)

Notice that the words "appointed " and "ordained" for eternal life come BEFORE the word "believed."

My dad always said it was a gift and he believed I always knew and could read peoples heart and what they were thinking. He called it the gift of discernment. What is it anyways? Is it something in the bible or in a dictionary?

James 1:13-14 (King James Version)

Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man

But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

So here we go, clear and cut, precise and definitive. God is NOT tempted into Evil.

Was Jesus tempted? whether he sinned or not that is not the issue here. But was he tempted?

Matthew 4:1-11 (New King James Version)

Satan Tempts Jesus

1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. 3 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”
4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”[a]
5 Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written:

‘ He shall give His angels charge over you,’

and,

‘ In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’”[b]

7 Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the LORD your God.’”[c]
8 Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”
10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you,[d] Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.’”[e]
11 Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.

They find another inhabitable planet. It will however, take 200 years to get there. So they build a space ship and your job is to select 10,000 people to go aboard and make a mission to this new planet, realizing of course, they will not make it but other generations will. How do you select these people?

One might say: "why do you waste your time over the existence of a god if it doesn´t impact your income or your love life or even your friendship circles".
I would tend to agree, if it wasn´t for this little detail of "buggy software".
You see, even if we seem to be made from the same mold, everything demonstrates that subtle changes can have disastrous effects. If we really were so similar, communication would be so perfect as to render most conversations (and especially arguments) useless.
As we are not, I think that stressing the foundations of one´s communication tools is paramount.
From my point of view, a computer Operating System (OS) is bug riddled if its assumptions do not match facts (Checksums) and twists the files to show what it wants (a puter couldn´t do that of course because it´s not analogous).
But humans can, and do. So for me a god-free frame of mind is important in a person because at least it tells me that one sees the world with facts, not wishful thinking.

First of all the bible rarely even mentions this character. When it does, it is a creature who masquerades as an angel and works for god as The Advesary. His job is to question the loyalty of god's servants so that 'god be not mocked'. The word devil in Greek means a caster or thrower. (As in casting aspersions.)
He tests David's loyalty (David fails), Job (who passes) and Jesus (who also passes.
The idea that this character is the source of evil came from Jewish leaders during the Babylonian exile who took from Persian invaders, the Zoroastrian 'evil god' Ahriman (as opposed to the 'good god', Ahura Mazda) and decided it explained how a 'good god' could allow evil in the world.
They then reinterpreted elements of the bible (Ezekial 28, about the fall of the Prince of Tyre and Isaiah 14 about the fall of the king of Babylon) to be about the satan.
The bible never makes Satan the King of Hell. That's a post biblical concept. Mostly from John Milton.

Okay, bear with me, I'm trying to follow a chain of thought here.

Those who answered the first follow up, I left some comments....you may wish to edit to respond on that one.

Okay....there are a great many people who have claimed to have had some personal experience with aliens/spaceships/etc.

Do these accounts tend to make you more or less willing to believe in aliens (or don't have an effect)?

Magick works. If it didn't I wouldn't bother with it. I worship the two archetypes of the ONE, the God & The Goddess, but lately I've been feeling drawn to the Quaker Christian faith. I feel all warm and crap when I read about it. Should I experiment, or should I remain faithful to my own religion?

I'm 16 years old.. and i have a boyfriend who is beautiful inside and out. We are both Christians, and we both know the "no sex before marriage rule", follow it. We respect each other and opinions. We both have many friends but we are a team together and we work together. I do know that you never know what's going to happen in a relationship, whether me and him will break up, or whether we won't. I don't believe in the whole teenage love isn't true thing, because i do understand in order to have a successful relationship you have to work at it; You need to sacrifice, forgive, and love with all your heart. We are both willing to do this. Seems like nothing except God can tear us apart. But i had prayed to God if he isn't the right person, don't let us continue, but if he is, let him stay and i will love him with all of my heart. It is almost a year now. The thing is.. we are both of different race. People do not take us seriously, and MY (not his) parents will shun me if we were to get
