They find another inhabitable planet. It will however, take 200 years to get there. So they build a space ship and your job is to select 10,000 people to go aboard and make a mission to this new planet, realizing of course, they will not make it but other generations will. How do you select these people?

I'd choose people who understand the mission inside and out, and are good teachers. Teaching the second generation properly will ensure they know what to teach the third generation, etc.

And inhabitable = habitable. One of those rare instances where the "in-" prefix doesn't connote a negative. "Inflammable"/"flammable" is another.

Voluntary application, then random selection from among the applicants. This would be the only fair way of doing it. What are you after?

Well, my initial idea when reading this question was, people from each ethnic group and religion, to represent Earth as a non-homogenous planet.

But... they'd all kill each other on the way.

Open it up to volunteers with qualifications. People are always willing to volunteer even if it means self-sacrifice. Its one of the enduring traits we get from God.
