why do people say that abortion should be legal as it is because of rape, incest, or medical desease when these reasons account for 7% of abortions? Why is it illegal to "sell" your baby (allow someone to pay for your change of living expenses during your pregnancy in exchange for a garunteed adoption right), but perfectly legal to destroy that baby who has no say in the matter? I don't understand the logic... can someone please explain to me? Why can't we make abortion legal only to those who are indeed rape victims and incese victims and those with deseases that threaten mom or baby (even though I still don't agree with it at all) and have a government run program (since the churches are too self righteous and indignant to do it) to help this "buy a baby" idea?

When you become pregnant, especially against your will, you'll understand the approval of abortion by the majority. Since you never will be, MYOB.

You (or anyone else) does not have the right to force a female to risk her life to bring a fetus to term.

It is not illegal to have someone pay your expenses in exchange for adoption rights. This is called "private adoption," and so long as it is reviewed by a judge and found to be within the law, there's no problem.

It would be possible to make abortion limited to only certain people if you could get past Roe v. Wade. But that was a decision by the Supreme Court, and I do not think they are likely to overturn it.

The critical question is when, exactly, an embryo becomes a baby. If you acknowledge the necessity of abortion in any case at all, you open the door to the concept that, as the Supreme Court has decided, an embryo does not have civil rights until viability, more or less. They made an arbitrary line at six months because medical technology will continue to push the time of viability down, especially if you count artificial wombs.

If you would try to make a Constitutional amendment giving Americans the full rights of citizens at conception, you would have chaos in all sorts of laws, most especially trusts and estates, probate, that sort of thing. Also insurance law, compensation for the mother who is forced to carry an unwanted baby to term, perhaps locking her up so she does not get an illegal abortion? Like I said, chaos.

By referring to private adoption as "buy a baby," you turn people against it that otherwise might understand it to be a valid alternative. We need to be as positive as possible toward all alternatives in order to minimize the use of abortion.

There's just no getting around the fact that ultimately, however much you might approve or disapprove, it is the pregnant woman's decision to make, or her parents or a judge if she is too young or legally incompetent. It was her decision back when it was illegal, too, but it was more expensive and more dangerous. Is that what you really want?

The first thing you should ask is:

Is a fetus a human being?
