there is no doubt that there are a number of unanswered questions in many scientific theories

but why do some people automatically think that those gaps can be filled by god?

I find many of the questions and answers on here relfect an alarming lack of historical perspective. For instance, people asking how can christians can "support" the fire and brimstone passages of the old testament. As if it were written last week by PR agency!
I see the religions of the iron age (christianity, judaism, Islam albeit a late-comer!)) as being phenomena of their times, and useful to mankind until recently (maybe the first world war was the cut-off point?) . But their usefulness has passed and we need to find different answers to help us deal with the challenges of the future.

PS. I am an atheist, but I know my history.

Do you feel it too?
That ill-defined sense of loss, of cosmic yearning?

(It's not a lack of any normal thing. It's not a lack of any religious figure in my life. And I'm pretty sure it isn't indigestion)

It's almost like homesickness.

Do you feel it?

Doesn't the fact that God is referred to as "He" in the bible reflect the fact that the bible was written by primitive "men" who thought they were superior to women?

I put "spiritually" in quotations so that you don't have to take it literally if you don't want to.

One of my friends today told me that she stashes money away incase things don't work out with her boyfriend and she leaves him.
My fiance is older than me and she said I am going to end up hating him for it and leave him, so I should start putting money away for when it happens.
She says all men 'stray' and to trust a man is living with your head in the clouds.
Isn't that the wrong attitude to have in a relationship?

"Reason is the greatest enemy that faith has; it never comes to the aid of spiritual things, but... more frequently than not... struggles against the divine Word, treating with contempt all that emanates from God"

Does anyone know where this comes from. I have read that it is "taken out of context", so I'd like to read it IN context.

In the OT, people used animals as blood offerings to God. Why is that necessary? The poor animal didn't do anything wrong! And if the human sinned, how does his slaughtering of an animal justify it?

Suppose you sinned and God were mad at you. So you pick up a stray dog from the streets and slaughter it! Then God says, "Very well, you killed the dog so I forgive you."

Atheists are always questioning the existance of god and jesus and whether or not the bible is true, but christians automatically state that Atheists are wrong, and sinful. You christians seem to forget to question your beliefs.

Can you ever forget about religion for awhile? Maybe accept everyone else as people? Trust me, I am accepting you christians as people, I just don't see why you shouldn't accept me because I am not religious.

If you are religious and do what my question asks, then move on and continue to be blind by religion. But hopefully, you have thought about things, and can come up with a nice answer.

Aren't Atheists just big babies?

Was Jesus born as an atheist?

Oh, and while you are at it, explain infinity. Give enough details for a good understanding.

I also have a New World Translation which of course has been seriously tampered with but is useful because it has an index. What I am really looking for is a fairly faithful copy with an index in a more modern style, you know without the thees and thous. Thank You.

It's strange really, I feel nauseous in the early evenings when I wake up, I have the oddest cravings (onion soup mixed w/ pumpkin juice) I'm normally so focus and in control and yet lately I've been afflicted with mood swings. I don't understand I haven't "been" with anyone since 1947 and.....I'm male...either parthenogenesis is a side effect of 7 horcuxes or this is a sign from a diety or dieties who's existance I've always rejected. What do you think, could I be indeed with child?

that attorney general ashcroft was probably a good example. He prayed every morning and based his work ethics on a make believe fairy tale god. Would you want people like that making decisions that affect your companies future?

Of course, the majority who read this question have already subscribed. So for you, I guess you're safe from eternal suffering.

But why is it that people believe in a God that would punish your eternal soul for questioning the unknown, or being human that is?

Would it not be better to believe in a loving and understanding being? One that might understand how complex the concepts of heaven, hell, the universe, life and the afterlife really are?

I think we deserve this much.

To blindly follow the crowd is one thing, but when the crowd turns and throws stones and epic warnings at non-believers as is the state of things, the milk turns sour.

"Pray or Die" as I believe Bill Hick's once put it.

Will future generations see these times and religious delusions as primitive? To think we are still at this place in our time is unsettling to me.

Why not just believe and cover all of the bases? I ask you would you want to believe in a God that punished your soul for thinking?

From what I understand, if Christianity did not exist neither would Islam. I am asking because of a previous question. It seems that Muhammad was influenced by Christianity, and even was provided a safe house by a Christian. I have a hard time believing that Islam would have even ever existed without Christianity. This is not even including the fact that one of their most revered prophets is Jesus.

With the exception of polytheism in Greek Mythology.....
Can Zeus be compared to God?
Can Heaven be compared to Mt. Olympus?
Can Hades(the god) be compared to the devil?
Can Hades(the place) be compared to Hell?

By the way, I am agnostic but I just hate when people attempt to prostylitize me when their beliefs could be called "mythology" in a thousand years or so.
