Love your curly hair!
This website is excellent. You can choose form 5-6 different translations and open each in a different window. It also has a great verse search tool. It's my favorite of all!

The ESV is what they are now using in the LCMS seminaries. It's supposed to be a much better translation into modern language than the NIV.
There are some excellent bibles out there, going from straight biblical text all the way to so much commentary that you don't know where one stops and the other starts.
Go to your local Christian store and ask if they have ones you can page through and see what you prefer.
Christian Book Distributers has a huge selection of bibles, most at really reasonable prices. http://www.christianbook.com/

A New King James Version is the closest to the KJV. It does just what you're looking for--no more thee's & thou's. I have a New King James Version Women's Study Bible and I love it. If you're interested in one, I can give you the name of a Christian catalog & 800 # where you can get one at a discounted price. Just e-mail me on here. :)

You can find Bibles that have multiple translations side by side. I saw one a couple days ago that had King James, New International, Revised Standard, and New English Translations. This is really great, since you can see how different phrasing can affect the meaning of a sentence if you're not careful.

I have the King James/N.I.V. parallel Bible which lets me compare both side by side. It's nice because sometimes it's hard for me to understand the King James version which I enjoy. So I can just look to the right side of the page and theres the N.I.V. version and I can first of all compare notes and second of all usually make sense out of It.

Have you tried the New King James translation? it's the one I use and I really like it.
There's also the New American Standard.
I'd avoid thought-for-thought translations if I were you and stick to word-for-word translations.
