The problem I have with Harry Potter is the books blur the line between good and evil...it makes evil, or witchcraft appear good and non harming when in reality it is just the opposite...If someone is strong in their faith I don't think these books will make them doubt their faith...but ones new to the faith, or don't know Jesus at all may be influenced towards evil and THAT is a problem....

The story is just a story. The witch craft and wizardry is just like the Wizard of Oz and the tales of King Aurthur and Merlin the magician. It is entertaining and even the pope before this current one said that if it gets kids to read it is great! Why does every fundamentalist want to place the Harry Potter books into the evil category??? My mother and family are teachers and we have all read Harry Potter! We saw NOTHING WRONG with it!!!!

I think that if you don't have a problem with The Wizard of Oz, then you'll find nothing offensive with any of the Harry Potter books.
In many ways Christians can learn a lot about how we as spiritual beings should conduct ourselves in this current world.
Rowlings shows how foolish it is to just stick our heads in the sand and pretend their is no evil to fight, and how those who are called to righteousness must stand up for what is right even at the risk of losing everything they have, including their lives. A very timely book I think that has many valuable lessons all could learn from.

When the first Harry Potter movie came out it was then that I heard on a radio commentary that JK Rowling researched the material for her book from real Witchcraft type books from the library. Everything from how to cast spells to the history of witchcraft, the occult, etc.
So, since the Harry Potter books are based on authentic witchcraft practices and such, it doesn't make sense for a believer to allow the book in their Christian home considering that the Bible speaks quite adamantly against these things.
Also, since the Harry Potter books have been out, interest in witchcraft and the occult has risen sharply mainly through the internet, especially with young people.

The reaction to Harry Potter was overblown and unnecessary. These are the same people telling us halloween is evil and shouldnt be celebrated. Its just all in fun within your culture. No contradiction with ones faith in Christ unless perhaps it becomes a stumbling block for a weaker brother.

that could be a private determination. each physique has diverse likes and dislikes. you're thinking, how can somebody desire Harry Potter over Lord Of The jewelry, yet people could ask your self why you like Lord Of The jewelry over Harry Potter. that could be a be counted of opinion and style. yet each physique could desire to rejoice with looking on the movies they love and interpreting the books they love.

Funny how JKR herself is Christian, and actually said a while ago that she thinks there's quite some religion in the books .. yet, some Christians think it's the work of the devil ...
Beats me, but it's a great book that can teach quite a lot - if you let it. If not, it's "just" a children's book. A great one nonethless.
edit: about the link two messages below mine - so, Pastor David(!) J Meyer was a WITCH? Did (s)he have a sex cange?

No. Our hunger after "pig" food is difficult to resist and we like to rationalize why it might be okay to nibble here and a bit...but God calls us to a better table full of good things that are wholesome and pure for our minds and bodies. Don't be fooled...think to yourself just why that genre of writing is so tempting and why it facinates people so much? Especially children. We all feel somewhat powerless and insignificant so we turn to these fantasies to fulfill our wishes for empowerment, to be the hero, the protector, the slayer of the evil thing that threatens so we can be admired by...by who? Its a recurring theme...man vs evil. The problem is that God already conquered what we couldn't conquer for ourselves so its a delusion, a fantasy and a entrapment to our minds. We are told:
1 Thessalonians 5:21
Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
Love in Christ, ~J~

So often we ask if something "is o.k." or "is it wrong". The better question might be "what's right with it" or "is this wise". When we are asking "is it wrong", we are really asking "how close can I get to sin without sinning".
Is reading Harry Potter o.k.? Does it accomplish - 1 Corinthians 10:31, "Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God".

The only people who seem to object to the Harry Potter books are the Old Testament Fundamentalists in the USA. The Christians are all enjoying them.
