Help...my friend just called and told me that she lost a co-worker. She's obviously very upset and was trying to think of what to do for the family, who are Jehovah's Witnesses. Sad to say, neither of us knows much about the religion, so we are not sure if there are any rituals (or taboos) she should know of. (We are both Protestants.) The last thing she wants to do is be inappropriate or insulting.

Aside from visiting the family (or calling to check in on them), what should she do, i.e, food, flowers, relgious card, etc. Aside from the usual, is there anything in particular she should know about ettiquette at the funeral?

FACTS by Michael Newdow. A Scientific "Religion" with rituals and prayers devoted to Science and the world. Has anyone ever heard of it? I'm thinking of looking into it, it sounds kind of fun. Any opinions?

I got an invitation to the Jehovah's Witnesses summer assembly but could not attend. If anybody has already heard the public address, can you say if one identifying mark of a real follower is that s/he worships Christ as Savior and Lord (based on the fact of Christ's deity)? If worshipping Christ is still forbidden in JW circles, did the public talk explain how it is possible to have a god that is not worshipped?

Yes, I know these folks are not considered "Mormon" by members of the LDS Church, but they consider themselves to be Mormon Fundamentalists. These are the people who still practice polygamy and believe in other early doctrines. The FLDS is one Fundamentalist Church, the Apostolic United Brethren is another and there is a group in Centennial Park, Arizona. There are others too although I think the AUB and FLDS are biggest. (No, I'm not gay by the way, I'm just interested in their political stances so I don't say the wrong thing when I talk to my AUB friend)

Are you absolutely sure there is no hell?
Are you absolutely sure that truth is relative?

By definition, atheism is the world view that denies the existence of God.more specific, traditional atheism affirms that there never was,is not,&never will be a God in/beyond the world. Can this dogmatic claim be verified?atheist cannot logically prove God's nonexistence. To know that a transcendent God does not exist would require a perfect knowledge of all things(omniscience). To attain this knowledge would require simultaneous access to all parts of the world&beyond(omnipresence). To be certain of the atheist's claim one would have to possess godlike characteristics.Obviously, mankind's limited nature precludes these special abilities. The atheist's dogmatic claim is therefore unjustifiable.Logician Adler"atheists attempt to prove a universal negative is a selfdefeating proposition"Sophisticated atheists are fully aware of the philosophical pitfalls.Redifining atheism:"an absence of belief in God"aka agnosticism. So b/c atheism is invalid, are you really atheism or agnostic?hmmmm....?

Are there any of you that have children or loved ones who don't believe in God and/or have rejected your faith? Doesn't it break your heart to know that according to your beliefs, they are going to go to hell? Is there anything worse than believing that your own child is going to suffer in hell for eternity? How do you cope with that?

People claim to be tolerant, but if you ask them a simple question about faith, they get all huffy and claim you are "forcing" them to do something.

Most of the Christians I know do not FORCE people to believe anything. Belief in Christ must be a personal choice. Christians are just following their beliefs by sharing and informing everyone they meet about the Truth of the Gospel.

So why do people get in such a huff? Can't not the people who preach tolerance, practice it?

What about the extreme case where a pregnancy is going to be born still born, and the risk exists that if the mother has the birth, it will prevent her from having future children.

President Clinton vetoed the Partial Birth Abortion Ban in his Administration standing with him were 3 mothers, 2 Christians, 1 Jewish woman, who had this procedure because the baby was going to be born still born and it would have rendered their reproductive system inoperable if they continued to full term.

Having the abortion protected their ability for further offspring, a real baby that would be born.

---

Is that abortion murder?

Wouldn't those abortions instead be pro-life, since those mothers are then able to have children going forward?

There are four paths towards liberation: bhakti yoga (path of devotion), jnana yoga (path of knowledge), raja yoga (path of meditation), and karma yoga (path of action/service). It can be a combination of the above. This applies to all religions like for example Mother Tereasa did karma yoga by being of service to the poor, sick and dying.

To what extent should non-believers accept "personal experience" or someone's "personal relationship" with God as evidence for God? People often cite this relationship as evidence for His existence. What about your personal experience/relationship should make me believe? Atheists: your thoughts on this sort of thing...?

Just thought we could nominate those who give Christianity a good face here...

I vote for Rachel. I think she's the most thoughtful Christian here. She knows God (if she exists) gave her a brain and wants her to use it!

In Luke 1, Zechariah becomes mute because he questioned Gabriel. Yet, when Mary questions Gabriel, she recieves no punishment. Is there a reason for this?

Heres my thought but Im not sure if it is correct: she is to hold the Holy Spirit and an angel cant curse the bearer of the Holy Spirit?

Does the independence of thought branch out into theology and political ideology?

If your pastor promotes a political position, for example a pro-choice position regarding abortion, are you independent of mind to maintain a pro-life position if you are prolife?

"You find a painting in the woods..."
"You find a car in the desert..."

These analogies almost always place an obviously designed object in a natural setting. Is this admitting that nature is not obviously designed?

The way I understand it, is that ya'll believe that I go to hell because I don't believe in specific things, such as the divinity of Jesus Christ. Well, once I have a shred of evidence... such as meeting him in the afterlife, I'll be happy to believe, repent, etc. Why does your god only forgive sins in life during life? But is completely unforgiving in the afterlife?
