first anything you hear from God will never contradict anything in the Bible
second does whatever He is asking you to do glorify Him or someone or something else
third does whatever He is asking you to do require you to come out of your comfort zone and require you stretching your faith
- if so then its from God -

I read some answers - these people are thinking you mean to hear an audible voice - I assume you mean speaking to you in the Spirit

one more addition - whatever it is that He has put in front of you to do you will see the next step - not necessarily the whole path - so it is important to stay focused on Jesus and not worry about the ups and downs that may occur on the path - if He set you on that path it was not a mistake and He will not change His mind

1. It does not contradict the scripture
2. Most times, God confirms it through other ppl (believers and non believers)
3. It is not 'forceful' i.e. it gives room to be 'tested' by others..

Never 4get to seek counsel especially on major decisions, keep on listening and soon u'll see how far God has led you.

Read the bible. There is no reason for the Holy Spirit to speak today, unless he says something different than the bible, and if he does he is not the Holy spirit. If you are a true believer in Christ, then the bible is the only guidance you need.

I usually pray and ask God to quiet my mind and any other thoughts that I may get. I then pray for him to bind any other spirits so they cannot influence or tempt me. So that only His Spirit is speaking to me. It really works for me.
