I am personally an atheist, although I full respect people of religous beliefs and their beliefs as long as they respect me and my lack of beliefs

I am just asking this to gain a perspective of why people choose to be religous, so if you are religous in ANY faith please respond honestly, or possibly rank those in order of importance if they are all important to you.

For Atheists, please answer why you think people who are religous do so, and please be civil, no bashing on either side.

Thanks in advance for any responses :)

Do we only want the blessing when we are good, but curse God for His chastisement when we are disobedient?

Give me this or I will throw a fit?

This was very Strange, but true.
I prayed to God, to bring me closer to him by his Word, and to send a servant of him that will plant it in me so i wont turn away from him because things that just happen in my life makes it hard to stay with God. A Month or so ago, I I talked to my uncle on the phone ,by the way i am 13 my uncle is 18, first thing we talked about was trials, he said the reason Why People go through trials is to mature us and to make our wisdom and knowledge complete, I also told him about how I think how some girls are hot, because I I cant seem to really care about any girl.n He said, Your a guy these things are Normal but you should Close your eyes and pray to God, not saying you should not be attracted, but I am saying that if you give into your lusts to much they will rule you and you wont know if you care about the woman your with or just lust over her. the scary thing is the coincidences of these things, was this supernatural? 2 u?

I'm serious. Friends? Nothing else to do? A challenge? An interesting mix of people?

I come here for friendships I've made. I like the format, the in-jokes. I mix with so many people that I wouldn't have in my real life. But what motivates YOU?

The problem I have with devout Christians is that many disbelieve outright in any sense of relativity whatsoever.

How can we know what pleasure even means without some sort of discomfort or pain?

How can we know what pain even IS without some sense of comfort or happiness?

The concept of Heaven is bogus. Without any pain, sadness, or any sense of suffering at all, no one can even recognize pleasure, peace or happiness. Utopia is a concept, but can never be a reality.

Likewise, without any sense of joy, pleasure, happiness or excitement, suffering cannot exist as a constant.

Everything must occur on a sliding scale of pleasure vs. pain.

For example, how could anyone appreciate sweets if you never taste anything other than sweets?

The Christian idea of Heaven is a only a concept and a myth. Nothing more. Same goes for Hell. Suffering is needed to be able to experience pleasure, and vice versa.

Anybody have a more cogent argument?

Its seems fair to say that its considered wrong to swear on the bible.
Couple of things here I am confused about.
1) Where did this practice start? I mean if its considered wrong and basically says so in the bible...who thought of this?
2) Christians (and yes this may come off as loaded but not meant to be) by looking at this does it seem to make sense as to why religion should not be intergrated into governement. I mean something like swearing on the bible should be taken seriously, yet it is not, even by our presidents. Which gives the impression that religion comes a part of governement only when it is convient for that government official. By swearing on the bible it becomes convient because it leads to false promise of that official...ie "he/she swore on the bible or talks about God so therefor must be a good person". Seems to actaully corrupt

i might be missing something but when JESUS was baptisted by john the baptist, there is no mention of godfathers in the bible. today godfathers need to have been married by the catholic church and attend classes in order to have their baby baptist(plus many orther requirements). it is not a problem for me but some of my relatives i've heard have gone to mexico to baptist their babies. maybe that is another reason why many people have left the catholic church. i think that if the church did not have too many requirements to baptist babys it would not lose many members.

Don't atheists think this life is it, and thats it? why's he wasting all his energy on God if he doesn't believe in Him? wouldn't partying be more logical?
