Its seems fair to say that its considered wrong to swear on the bible.
Couple of things here I am confused about.
1) Where did this practice start? I mean if its considered wrong and basically says so in the bible...who thought of this?
2) Christians (and yes this may come off as loaded but not meant to be) by looking at this does it seem to make sense as to why religion should not be intergrated into governement. I mean something like swearing on the bible should be taken seriously, yet it is not, even by our presidents. Which gives the impression that religion comes a part of governement only when it is convient for that government official. By swearing on the bible it becomes convient because it leads to false promise of that official...ie "he/she swore on the bible or talks about God so therefor must be a good person". Seems to actaully corrupt

I will be honest, I consider people who can't get that one thing right to be sanctimonious twits - pure political animals that think that by showing off to their religious friends who got them into office they'll get the vote again next time. It generally works...I have only my one vote to grant or withold. But I really do wonder who advises people that this "looks good" when it only makes them look too ignorant to READ the first book of the New Testament (if you can't be bothered to read it, why swear on it?).

We are not to swear VAINLY. Swearing an oath to speak truly is only done for solemn reasons. At trials when life and freedom are at stake. When taking office to solemnify the occasion and breaking the oath carries earthly and heavenly perils. Yes, if the oath-breaker is a liar or an atheist will the oath on the bible hold any significance? Maybe not to them. But, God holds the other copy of the contract, and he is patient in collection of debt.

It's a symbolic thing, the belief in the Bible is a sacred text and somehow represents justice.

I don't see how swearing on a Bible in a court doesn't violate the separtation of church and state deal...you're not in an edifice built for religious purposes to decide moral issues, you're in a structure meant to decide civil matters.

People in the Bible days around 13 a.d. would swear ( God is my witness ) Jesus stated that God is in heaven.it was law to have 2 witnesses or more if you wanted to say something happen.........

Man over time because there was a ferar of God decided hey..... everyone fears that if I lie than I will die....
So, then they would Swear on the Bible by God's word something were to be true or not...

The Bible says swear not by earth, it is God's footstool
Or by Heaven it is his throne

We affirm by an oath in court it is the same

*weary sigh* I will, yet again, attepmt to clarify the point that nowhere in our Constitution is there anything about "religion should not be intergrated [sic] into government." What it says, in short, is that the government shall not interfere with religions. Really pretty different, actually.

Please read your Constitution.

Jesus said not to swear on anything. Why DO we swear on the Bible of all things? Best insightful question I've read tonight.
