Mt 18:1At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?"
2He called a little child and had him stand among them. 3And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Now don't go getting all deep, I'm just wanting a quick picture of how many atheists have never been religious and how many are "converts."

It's just that as someone who has never been religious at all, I get particularly peeved when I read "atheists are angry with God or have had a bad religious experience."

So please indulge me, just a few words on whether you've always been an atheist or not.

ok, i have seen this debated a few times here on R&S...my question is---my dad is a now long time atheist, and a former methodist church deacon and sunday school superintendant (about 20-25 years ago) and was diagnosed with prostate cancer about 6 weeks ago and is half way through his radiation treatments...my mother, who is a very devout christian, has told me that he has made a few little comments, regarding faith and believing in a higher power, one being that he told his dr. that "we really don't know if there is a higher power"...also, since he is one-quarter cherokee indian, he has been doing some research on the "Great One"...any atheists' opinions as to what is going on with him would be greatly appreciated along with others!
thanks, y'all!

I used this to answer a question but to be fair I will pose it as a question so that those who are upset by it can respond to it. Tell me what your answer is to this riddle.

If God is willing to prevent evil, but is not able to
Then He is not omnipotent.

If He is able, but not willing
Then He is malevolent.

If He is both able and willing
Then whence cometh evil?

If He is neither able nor willing
Then why call Him God?

Ecclesiastes 3:11
"He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end"

Every thing is as God made it; not as it appears to us. We have the world so much in our hearts, are so taken up with thoughts and cares of worldly things, that we have neither time nor spirit to see God's hand in them. The world has not only gained possession of the heart, but has formed thoughts against the beauty of God's works.

With God's help do we see his hand at work in our lives or are our hearts so full of adverts and desires that we're all missing the best stuff?

I am an Agnostic, meaning I admit we can't prove/disprove God exists. I admit Jesus maybe was not divine. But why does it matter if He was divine? The fact of the matter is that no matter if Jesus was divine or not, He has inspired millions of people around the globe to live better lives. He gave people hope in his time who thought there was nothing to live for. There is nothing to lose by admiring Him.
