We help others only because we want to please God and go to heaven. Is that not selfish? Shouldn't helping others come as a result of true love and concern for others' sufferings?

Believers, answer this.

I know this might be a difficult question to have answered without some form of anger or overly religious piety but isn’t that like saying you can’t be Christian and open minded? Isn’t one’s spiritual belief founded on the principals of what is right for one’s self and is it the right of the majority to judge what that spiritual belief should be for the individual? Radical Islamic fundamentalists and Muslim extremists judge their fellow man in this fashion and are decried as evil or wrong, how is Christianity any better when they do it? Scripture set aside, don’t we as a people have the power in our beliefs to let our vision of God do the judging for us while we merely work on living with one another regardless of ideology?

I use the term ‘spirituality’ because the issue of ‘choice’ has become a spiritual issue with regards to the “taking of a life”, but why doesn't that apply to the taking of all life? Maybe the correct motto should be “you can’t be Christian and for the war”.

The Watchtower/JW website says that there are 6.3 million "weekly home Bible courses taught", but I don't know any in my neighborhood. How many students do I need to organize before they will form a course here?

Are their teachers certified somehow? Also, whose "home" is that, and what kind of materials do the students need? Do they have classes for children (like bible stories or whatever), even if the parents don't want to participate?

JWs please just answer without really long answers, and others please don't use my question as an excuse to attack Jehovah's Witnesses.

I knew Christianity was false years ago...
I figured it out when I realized that all the people around me who were the most religious were also the most cruel and miserable.
(Fundies please spare me the lecture about how they were not "true christians")

But I want to LEARN more about it (atheism!), and would appreciate any authors or books you can suggest.
Thanks!

Do you have any dual friendships (RL and online) do you believe they would hinder the free expression offered by internet ambiguity?
----------------------------------------------------------

My thoughts...

I will probably introducing an old close friend to my YA + 360 persona to keep in touch as we are separated by many miles. I don’t think knowing him online will change my behavior at all.

However since I'm much more open with my relegations opinions and doubts online, I would be a bit more wary of introducing many of the people I know in RL to my online persona.

Okay, I'm not exactly sure about this but does everyone of every religion agree that it's 2007 now?
I mean isn't that supposed to mean that Jesus was born 2007 years ago but why would people of other religions (who don't believe in Jesus or general christianity) agree that it's 2007?

And if the reason is (not saying it is, just assuming) that it's because it's easier to use the same date worldwide then why can't we agree on other important things for worldwide use like one language or one currency?

If Adam and Eve were intellegently designed, why were they not smart enough to realize the ramifications of eating the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil?

Yes, they had freewill, but they still could have been made intellegent enough to not take from the tree.

i just saw a post that said the atheists should find their own section...hmmm. did Jesus not hang out with theives, tax collectors, lepers, and society's less desirables? are you better than Jesus? i have been on R & S for a few weeks now...however i got about 5 violations over the weekend, but, whatever.
anyway, i find the atheists in this forum to be very knowledgable of facts, both scientific and biblical, and just as firm in their belief or lack of, as we christians are.

don't you think we could learn alot from them???

It seems when Atheists try to bash Christianity they always quote something about giving the death penalty to adulterers and homosexuals or verses condoning slavery from the Old Testament when under the New Covenant those things do not apply. Jesus actually showed what the response to adultery should be under the covenant of grace. He said, "He who is without sin throw the first stone" so only a sinless person can punish someone under Old Testament law.

I just want Atheists to know that there are two covenants and what Christians follow isn't the Old Testament law that seems very harsh. That law was made that harsh to separate and purify the Jews as a race worthy of the Messiah. Now we are under the Covenant of Grace where anything can be forgiven even adultery and gayness. And as for slavery, it was only for debters and war prisoners anyway and they would all be let free every year of Jubillee.

There's this video by the American Family Association that says so, titled "The Day They Kicked God Out of School," and of course that argument is made frequently.

But...kids are allowed to say grace at lunch, do activities like See You At the Pole (praying around the flagpole--I organized the first at my former school), pass out tracts, have Bible Clubs, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and other groups, wear their symbols, etc. Plus God, according to the people who tend to allege this, is supposed to be omniscent and all-powerful, so he can't get kicked out of any place anyway.

So why say this, let alone make a video about it?

Adams signed the Treaty of Tripoli (June 7, 1797). Article 11 states:

"The government of the United States is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion."

From Jefferson's biography:

"...an amendment was proposed by inserting the words, 'Jesus Christ...the holy author of our religion,' which was rejected-----'By a great majority in proof that they meant to comprehend, within the mantle of its protection, the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and the Mohammedan, the Hindoo and the Infidel of every denomination.'"

"Christianity...[has become] the most perverted system that ever shone on man....Rogueries, absurdities and untruths were perpetrated upon the teachings of Jesus by a large band of dupes and importers led by Paul, the first great corrupter of the teaching of Jesus." --- Thomas Jefferson
