For the same reason people living today follow their own desires and refuse to believe God's word. They think they know better than God or they refuse to believe in him at all. They are deceived, just like Adam and Eve.

It was part of God's plan for them to partake of the fruit of the tree. While it caused them to become mortal, this state (mortality) also made it possible for them to fulfill the other commandment that God gave to them, to multiply and replenish the earth.
God said, "But of the fruit of the tree of knowledge thou shalt not eat, for in the day that thou eatest... thou shalt surely die." He gives them a commandment, and then tells them the consequence of breaking it. He was lovingly warning them of the difficulty that would arise. But they chose to partake, willing to pay the price of suffering, so that they could fulfill God's other commandment, and also so that they could become wise (ie know good from evil).
Answer: They did understand the ramifications of eating the fruit. Why would you doubt God's intelligence? Have you looked at a strand of DNA? or a cell, with all its intricate organelles? I would say God knows what he is doing.

They were supposed to take the fruit. God wanted them to eat the fruit. It was the devil, (the chief archon) and his demons who forbid them. God made Adam intelligent but the devil put Adam to sleep and cast a veil of ignorance over his mind. He did the same to Eve after she was created. God sent them to the tree to undo what the devil had done to them. Read about it.

Its is the lust that made them sin. When GOD said no it got to be no.GOD aint changing it after 1000 years either. But man has a freewill. When you lust for something and dont have much fellowship with GOD u can fall into traps like these.GOD created man and woman in his image.Surely they know its bad for them to eat it.But lust is a sin.For there lust they lost everything.More importanly they lost there relationship with GOD.But GOD made a way through JESUS to reconcile u back to him because he loves u.
John 3:16 says "For GOD so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whoso ever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life".Ask JESUS to come into your heart and forgive ur sins and cleanse ur past with his blood.
With a simple prayer like above u can be saved.

intelligence has nothing to do with sinning or not sinning. You can be the most intelligent person on the earth and still disobey God. You could be a very intelligent person and still sin- we chose to do what we desire to do. WE CHOSE to sin- God chose to give us a chance for forgiveness through Christ's blood.

Even the smartest of men, do dumb things. Why would Adam and Eve be different?
Plus, they believed a lie...

its a metaphor.
it means that once you know good from evil, you are responsible to do good and it is just to be punished or rewarded accordingly.
a child or an animal that has not yet "eaten from the tree" is exempt.

You are right, they very well did not have to eat from the tree. They were smart enough not to. But they did.

They were intelligent but given free will. If free will does not allow for all choices (including bad) then it is not entirely free. They had the ability to choose correctly but their desires got in the way. They were not created as highly intelligent robots.

Why do men and women commit adultery? They're smart enough to know its consequences...yet they still do it.
Its called temptation, and its difficult to resist.
