I'm an engineer, but I'm also a scientist. This makes my life tricky in many ways. One of the more trivial is that engineers (especially computer people) tend to say "the data is..." while scientits say "the data are..." Both insist that they are right. I'm not really looking for any arguments from authority (Dr. so and so says "data is the plural of datum in Latin" sorts of things). I just want to hear some people's own thoughts on the matter.

Thanks.

Cheers.

There are numbers of products for teaching non-native English speakers. If you are an Asian speaking English as 2nd language, can you recommend a product or a company that has taught them the American accent the QUICKEST (ideally in about in about 3 months but THE QUICKER THE MORE DESIRABLE).
If you have succeeded in American accent training, what tips can you suggest as to the amount of time you need to devote for training, how to change your speach habit and etc. Can it done by oneself with audio CDs? How much the age and personality affect the sucess rate of training?
In the American Accent Traing from Barrons, it says Americans move lips and jaws less than the rest of world. So if you bite your teeth when you accent train, you will sound more like a native English speaking American, and less like Chinese, Korean or Japanese. I'd like to get some tips like this based on your experience if you've succeeded. Some say accent training is a life-long practice particularly if you are

You know, pardon my boldness, but
I have liked you for such a long time
Yes, I know that you aren't single, but we can
Be discreet, at times we see each other
In contraband (illegally)

I promise that I will be discreet in front of people
I am able until I have to act indifferent
When they tell me of you, oh yes

I promise not to leave a single mark upon you
Not a bit of evidence that I was there
I promise not to be demanding, I promise to be
Patient

Hi. There is some sentences that confuse me.

" I try to be patient with Tina, but she makes snide remarks about everything I do. For example, if I drop something, she says, "Isn't he clumsy? Ha, Ha!" On one occasion, she served hors d'oeuvres to the person I was talking to, with her back to me, and then walked away with the tray.
I don't mind the rude behavior half as much as her attitude"

When she served hors d'oeuvres to the person I was talking to, with her back to me, and then walked away with the tray, grandfater thought it a rude behavior. Why is it rude? Because she took the tray withouth asking the guest if he finished his meal and walked away? Please help me out~
