It means that you can't have it both ways....you can either eat the cake or you can keep the cake..but you can't do both...

It means you are trying to take advantage of a situation by attempting to exploit all of the possibilities. The phrase come from the idea that you would want to both save your cake for later and eat some of it now, which seems impossible. If you "had your cake and ate it, too" it means you have succeeded in exploiting the situation.

Hope that helps.

Having a cake is putting temptation in front of your face. Do you give into that temptation (a bad one, like drinking, smoking, sex, money...) and put your hands all over the temptation and use it and possibly abuse it. Or do you ignore that temptation or get rid of it entirely, or give it to someone else.
My cake is food and credit cards. I just cut up my cards (got rid of the temptation) and stopped eating out and buy small amounts of good foods for my home (ignoring temptation and trying to take control of myself).

That means they want more than their share
2- Your share and theirs also.
3-Everything yours, and theirs is really theirs.
4- An example would be if someone borrowed something from you and did not return it and showed up for another loan of the same thing.
They want something that will not last such as food but want it to be never ending.

It means you can't have anything you want. You must choose on of them: either your whole cake or to eat it!
