Did you believe in Santa as a kid and if so, are you glad or were you pissed when you found out he wasn't real?

Almost 50 years ago I was sitting in the auditorium of a religious boarding school. My assigned seat was next to the most talented musician at the school. She played violin, piano & clarinet.. sang beautifully, perfect pitch.

There was a visiting preacher who was there for a week preaching to us every day. On this particular day he began to describe the tortures of Hell... crackling, burning fat and flesh... screaming sinners...

The young lady sitting next to me broke down in tears. She had been burned in an accident a few years earlier. He managed to tap into her pain & fear, without mercy.

It was at that moment two things came over me... I wanted to put my arms around her and hug her, but if I did we would both be punished. Then I thought, "if this is what religion is about I want no part of it."

Roman pagans first introduced the holiday of Saturnalia, a week long period of lawlessness celebrated between December 17-25. During this period, Roman courts were closed, and Roman law dictated that no one could be punished for damaging property or injuring people during the week long celebration. The festival began when Roman authorities chose “an enemy of the Roman people” to represent the “Lord of Misrule.” Each Roman community selected a victim whom they forced to indulge in food and other physical pleasures throughout the week. At the festival’s conclusion, December 25th, Roman authorities believed they were destroying the forces of darkness by brutally murdering this innocent man or woman. In the 4th century CE, Christianity imported the Saturnalia festival hoping to take the pagan masses in with it. Christian leaders succeeded in converting to Christianity large numbers of pagans by promising them that they could continue to celebrate the Saturnalia as Christians.

Humans are animals, just because we have higher intelligence than other creatures, we still are and remain animals, we even reproduce the same way as f.e. cows. So that would mean that all animals go to heaven, not only our pets, but also all the cows that are eaten. Otherwise, it wouldn't make any sense if only humans and cats and dogs and the occassional guiney pig would go to heaven. It would have to be other animals too. And if only humans would go to heaven, then first of all [heaven would kinda suck] but it would be weird because all we are is animals. Unless there is no heaven at all.....what do you think? Please don't waste my time by answering in a rude or silly manner.

What I mean, is do you talk to "Susan" at work and know she's not a Christian and automatically assume she's going to hell without even considering she may come to Christ eventually, and treat her as so? Just wondering because I see people do this all the time and use the excuse that they don't want the "sinner" to be a bad influence on them. Can't you still accept people for who they are without conforming to their ways? Just a question :)

I'm really a big fan of Diana's contributions to the world, her selflessness, and gorgeous style, but she really behaved badly at times. She committed adultery for years, used the press when it was convenient, and messed around with married men.

She herself was married, and, understandably, didn't want Camilla around,so why would it be ok for her to be the other woman in somebody else's marriage?I've actually heard some people calling for her to be nominated for saint hood, which I ceratinly don't believe is necessary.

I just saw this in part of an answer to a question about the bible. Can anyone else see a problem with it? :)

"Books were excluded because they were determined not to be completely true the the remainder of the Bible.

The Bible consists of 66 books: 39 in the OT and 27 in the new. The Bible took about 1600 years to write. It was written in three languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek) by about 40 authors and is internally consistent throughout."

No Christian has demonstrated reasonably the need for and
purpose of God ever intending to put all his truth in one bundle of writings called the Bible. No Christian has ever demonstrated reasonably why all other records of his dealings with people anywhere else in the world are not to be considered the Word of God.

Speaking at a graduation ceremony, Elder Ballard urged BYU-H graduates to participate in online discussions about the Church. http://www.lds.org/ldsnewsroom/eng/news-releases-stories/apostle-urges-students-to-use-new-media

I'll admit that I feel like I'm addicted to Yahoo! Answers, and that I waste too much of my time on here. However, after reading this article, I actually feel better about spending so much time answering questions about the Church.

Of particular interest to me were the following statements:

"...conversations about the Church would take place [online] whether or not Church members decided to participate in them."

"We cannot stand on the sidelines while others, including our critics, attempt to define what the Church teaches."

"Perceptions of the Church are established one conversation at a time."

As you may already know from my previous questions, I am Catholic. Though I disagree with some views! Is that bad?

My strong Catholic and Orthodox friends, believe differently than me on the issue of homosexuality.(Orthodox is closely related to the Roman Catholic church because it branched off from it a while back) They are strongly against it. I believe it's ok. So many people claim homosexuals will go to hell--in my eyes this is not true! I think anyone can go to Heaven, no matter what religion, preference, etc. if they just believe in God. Homosexuality is not a sin! I am not gay, but this is the way I see it. Is it wrong to call myself a Catholic when I stray far from their beliefs?!

To be a true atheist you must have absolute knowledge that there is no God. So since you cannot answer this question, doesn’t that mean you are not “sure” of the existence of God. So how can you be an atheist if you do not have absolute knowledge?
