As you may already know from my previous questions, I am Catholic. Though I disagree with some views! Is that bad?

My strong Catholic and Orthodox friends, believe differently than me on the issue of homosexuality.(Orthodox is closely related to the Roman Catholic church because it branched off from it a while back) They are strongly against it. I believe it's ok. So many people claim homosexuals will go to hell--in my eyes this is not true! I think anyone can go to Heaven, no matter what religion, preference, etc. if they just believe in God. Homosexuality is not a sin! I am not gay, but this is the way I see it. Is it wrong to call myself a Catholic when I stray far from their beliefs?!

Jesus never said a word about homosexuality. Was he stupid and forgetful?

The Ten Commandments are silent on homosexuality. The Ten Commandments were written by the finger of God. Was God having a bad day and forgot?

Homosexuality is condemned in Exodus. But Exodus says you can sell your daughter into slavery. Leviticus condemns homosexuality. And says you should kill people who work on the Sabbath. Romans condemns it. And Romans says Gossips should be put to death. Corinthians condemns it. And Corinthians says women should shut up in Church. Timonthy condems it. And Timothy also says wearing pearls is a sin. Gomorrah was destroyed: but when Lot escaped Gomorrah, he had sex with his daughters, and that was ok. I will go with the Ten Commandments and all the words of Jesus. God himself does NOT condemn homosexuality. Men and THEIR rules do.

Jack Flanders, that is a great response.

Everyone has disagreements sometimes with their beliefs. It is a byproduct of having a packaged religion, complete with a set of rules and core beliefs. Sometimes this disagreement is enough to make one leave their religion and follow another.

In your heart, you know what is right. You know that to love and have compassion is correct, and that to hate and condemn is incorrect. Jesus had moments when he was angry, but I believe he was probably just frustrated with the status quo and their inability to recognise the truth.

Sin is sin. All sin is equal. To demonise homosexual acts and then let other things slide (like raffles. Raffles are gambling, which is against the teachings of the Bible, but how many of us buy a ticket for the meat tray?) is to fail to recognise the equality of sin. Some sins are not worse than others. All sins are as bad as each other, because they damage the soul.

Homosexuals who are committed to their faith will undoubtably receive salvation.

I think you will find that real Catholics (not lip service Catholics who fill their hearts with hate) will agree that homosexual Christians will receive salvation. They are able to ask for forgiveness just like anyone else.

A bit.

+ Cafeteria Catholics +

Cafeteria style dining means to pick and choose what food to take from a cafeteria line.

The term "Cafeteria Christians" refers to people who view Christianity like a cafeteria where one picks and chooses only those beliefs that appeal to them and reject a genuine interpretation of Christian doctrine and the teachings of Jesus.

The term "Cafeteria Catholics" is similar. It is used to describe people who dissent from certain teachings of the Catholic Church while maintaining an outward identity as Catholics.

In Los Angeles in 1987, Pope John Paul II said: "It has to be noted that there is a tendency on the part of some Catholics to be selective in their adherence to the Church's moral teaching. It is sometimes claimed that dissent from the magisterium is totally compatible with being a "good Catholic," and poses no obstacle to the reception of the Sacraments. This is a grave error that challenges the teaching of the Bishops in the United States and elsewhere."

Heresy is the obstinate denial after Baptism of a truth which must be believed with divine and Catholic faith.

"Cafeteria Catholics" in denial of certain truths are in danger of committing heresy.

+ Homosexuality +

Created in the image of the one God and equally endowed with rational souls, all men have the same nature and the same origin. Redeemed by the sacrifice of Christ, all are called to participate in the same divine beatitude: all therefore enjoy an equal dignity.

The Catholic Church believes there is nothing sinful about being homosexual. But homosexuals like all unmarried people are called to celibacy.

The Church specifically says that homosexuals "must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided."

Here is the text of the document, On the Pastoral Care of Homosexual Persons (1986): http://www.newadvent.org/library/docs_df86ho.htm

For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, section 2357-2359: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt3sect2chpt2art6.htm#2357

+ With love in Christ.
