Roman pagans first introduced the holiday of Saturnalia, a week long period of lawlessness celebrated between December 17-25. During this period, Roman courts were closed, and Roman law dictated that no one could be punished for damaging property or injuring people during the week long celebration. The festival began when Roman authorities chose “an enemy of the Roman people” to represent the “Lord of Misrule.” Each Roman community selected a victim whom they forced to indulge in food and other physical pleasures throughout the week. At the festival’s conclusion, December 25th, Roman authorities believed they were destroying the forces of darkness by brutally murdering this innocent man or woman. In the 4th century CE, Christianity imported the Saturnalia festival hoping to take the pagan masses in with it. Christian leaders succeeded in converting to Christianity large numbers of pagans by promising them that they could continue to celebrate the Saturnalia as Christians.

I don't care how Christmas celebration started. As a Christian it is celebration of Jesus birth and what it stands for in your mind is your issue. The Bible In Matthew Chapter 1-2 records Jesus being born. All four gospel in the New Testament are account of Jesus Christ life and the Bible is what I trust more then anything another human can suggest.

I am a Christian and have long taught that this holiday is a hoax on society. Jesus would have told us celebrate it had he so desired. There is no Bible passage that calls on Christians to celebrate his birth in the way the Catholic church has given to us. Catholicism itself is NOT Biblical! Catholicism has NO RIGHT to make up holidays, rules and doctrine that one cannot find in Scripture. Christmas and Easter are simply two more abuses of Catholic tradition becoming bound religious practice - even among those professing to be Protestant. Christians are to celebrate the life and death of Christ in communion. It is in this observance, week to week, that the Lord said we would remember him: "This do in remembrance of me." It is sad that folks are simply not content to do things simply as God dictates for men to do in His word (cf. Colossians 3:17).

It is a day we set aside to remember His birth , nothing more nothing less...It is in all actuality probably not the correct date ...
We do not know that for sure , we go by seasons, the time the census was taken in Israel, and the star....
Those man made ideas that you present are interesting..But what you lack is the study of history Jesus is recorded in many other books besides the bible by kings and authorities ( who some of which ) hated Him...
And there is ample archelogical evidence (as if I need it) to support the bible ...
I have run into 3 kinds of people
those who say He was a lunatic...
those who say he was an illusionist..
those who say He was a great teacher nothing more..
but you are a rarety to be sure...so I will leave you with this..
For someone who did not exist according to you , He sure changed the world....There is more to Jesus than meets the eye...
Here is some history for you :
Many ancient secular writers mention "Jesus" and the movement he birthed, and the fact that they are antagonistic to christianity makes them reliable..
#1-Cornelius Tacitus-a.d. 55-120..roman historian
#2-Lucian of Samosata-a greek satirist of the latter half of the second century..Lucian spoke scornfully of "Christ" ...
#3-Suetonius - another roman historian ..
#4-Pliny the younger- governor of Bithynia in Asia Minor A.D.112...
#5-Thallus - one of the first secular writers who mentions "Christ " is Thallus , dated perhaps at A.D. 25
#6- Phlegon another secular authority , he wrote a history called 'Chronicles' some of his work was lost however fragments have been found and preserved by 'Julius Africanus'
#7- Mara Bar-serapion -he was a syrian and stoic
People will often die for truth , but never a lie.........

I read somewhere a long time ago that it was suggested that Jesus was born in March and something else suggested Jan. Very Interesting question/thought though.
There are a lot of different Gods and reasons that this time of the year was celebrated..including the winter solstice.

Go and read Luke 2.........it may not say exactly when but if you will read it and then go back read other stories in the bible it will actually give you a very close timeline to December.......and you are right it may not be December 25th.....I have never sworn to it being that particular day, even though I do celebrate Christmas......
I also celebrate Easter and I know that is probably not the exact day our Savior rose either; however that does not matter to me, I KNOW that it happened!!!!!
There is another day I know will happen; even though I am not sure when and I sure do hope people are READY!!!!

Have you ever considered therapy ?
The Bible mentions the birth of Christ in the first 4 Gospels of the New Testament - not to mention all the prophecies in the Old Testament.
Even though , the date of His birth was probably in September or in the first week of October, it is the spirit of the season that counts - not the historical accuracy.
It is for this reason that I continue to celebrate Christmas.

for your information, I know that Christmas may not actually be the time Jesus was born, it is just simply a day that we set ASIDE to celebrate it. and you didn't burst anyone's bubble. we are not the ignorant people you imagine. this is the holidays, season of giving..so lets just celebrate it, as a time to be with our families, and have a good time. not with this petty crap you are so intent on digging up. God Bless, and have a VERY Merry Christmas. also, there is a recording in the Bible of Jesus' birth...it's in the book of Matthew.

That is so profound. Such genius should not be wasted on Yahoo Answers.
My personal belief is that Jesus was born around March 15th, considering Joseph was on his way to pay his taxes. (Congess changed tax day to April 15th in 1955 in order to confuse christians.)

Yeah I know that. But I don't see anything wrong With have a special day to remember Jesus Christ. The Day is Irrelevant is the thought behind it that counts. And Of course Jesus Was Born, there is no respected historian who even considers that theory. Why? Because it was disproved. And The Bible has the Birth of Jesus Recollected as well as all the prophecies of His Birth.

Wait while I slurp up this DRINK.
There's no record of Jesus being born in the Bible??!! Obviously you've never read it.
Read the gospels of Matthew and Luke, not to mention the Old Testament, which prophesied his birth.
We know that Dec. 25th is not the day he was born, but that is the day that the early church set aside to celebrate his birth, and the birth of God-with-us permanently trumped any and all pagan holidays.
So the origins of the trappings and wrappings of the holiday do not matter an iota and they don't change the event or the meaning of the day.
<<
"...and there is no record of a mr. jesus every being born, in the bible or elsewhere. So, when you celebrate christmas this year, make sure you know that mr. jesus has nothing to do with it."
and again, it simply doesn't matter WHEN -- only that it WAS.>>
