I'm going to a Christmas party and we're going to be doing a random gift exchange where you pull some one's name out of a basket and give them your gift. And it's supposed to be under $10. So, does anyone have ideas for cheap gifts that both guys and girls will like?

I've seen this sooo often. When people say, "anyone can do this, but it takes real skill to do that". Well so what? Just because something is harder to do doesn't make it better. What if the end result is the same? Two people can achieve the same thing. One does it the easy way, the other the hard way. For example, some people might use a computer to create CGI objects to place in a real environment, whereas another would get physical models built. If they both look exactly the same, or even if the CGI object looks better than the physical ones, then why does it matter if one was harder to do? People always make the argument, "Things like this was hard to do back in the old days, nowadays it's all done on a computer". Well, how do they know what it's like to do something on computer. In my experience it's often harder on the computer. If people are really thinking that all good things have to push you until you're near death then we might as well all stop driving cars, stop riding

In Christian countries, it is customary to swear an oath to Almighty God, such as if you were about to give evidence in a court.
Do atheists swear such oaths, and if so, to whom?
Or do they make Affirmations, a secular form of oath swearing.
And yes, the "atheists only please" is there to make Gandalf happy.

I see what this claim is trying to say: even if you're an atheist, you almost certainly grew up in a culture infused with religion, and this will almost certainly affect your worldview. But then this would predict that the moral views of most non-religious Europeans would be very Christian. But they're really not. I think this claim forgets that religion is only one element in a culture, and sometimes its influence has become quite small.

2000 years ago the religious fundamentalists accused Christ of blasphemy,of having demonic powers, and of encouraging people to disobey the Law of Moses--like refusing to stone an adulteress to death---or was there some other reasons for the religious fundamentalists to persecute Christ so much??

America has got crime problems. Serious problems. When I look at many Western European countries (Norway, Sweden, Switzerland) etc, they have got very little crime, strong economies and the people are fairly wealthy. These countries are also quite peaceful.

Unlike Saudi Arabia, these countries can get rid of crime while still having a democracy. They dont have to resort to barbaric acts to maintain peace.

What do you think?

Oh yeah Canada is quite good too.

Why do people practice Scientology? I'm agnostic. But at least I understand the main religions (i.e Christianity, Islam, Judaism). These religions have been around for millenia, and have some basis, but people KNOW that scientology was just made-up. How can people believe in its tenets?

Your christmas has its origins in northern European countries where they celebrated a festival at the "christmas" time long before the arrival of Christianity. It was the celebration of the winter solstice. The emperor Constantine hijacked youle i.e. the winter solstice and invented christmas to encourage a common religious festival between Pagans and Christians. It's easier to convert people If they have something in common.

Easter has nothing to do with Jesus or the Bible either. Is was also a pagan festival, a fertility festival for the saxon Goddess Eostre or Ostara, who symbolized new life. The festival involved virgin sacrifices and orgies. Have you ever wondered what eggs and bunnies could have to do.

It puzzles me that if humans have all the attributes they claim, eternal life, a god that interacts with them personally sometimes. Why is there no manual provided by God? When new buy a car or an electrical device we get a manual. The Bible and Vedas are just peoples ramblings and very controdictory. Where is that manual of life?

Should it be changed to something else so it doesn't seem that Agnostic people are unintelligent?

I am not a follower of that religion, but I think that it is dumb that Germany (which is supposed to be a liberal democracy) can ban scientology under the premise that it clashes with the state's constitution. What right has a government got, to stop people from practicing what they want???

What is it about scientology that the German authorities disapproves of???

I'm in RCIA and have been told that I can go to confession but I can not receive absolution because I'm not Catholic. I will make my first confession a week before Easter Vigil but at that point I still won't be Catholic until Confirmation at Easter Vigil so what about absolution then? Why wait until then?

If I had been Baptized Catholic before my parents left the church and came to RCIA I would be able to get absolution because I would be considered Catholic. Help me understand why I have to carry my sin through RCIA because of a decision made when I was a baby.
