Why do people practice Scientology? I'm agnostic. But at least I understand the main religions (i.e Christianity, Islam, Judaism). These religions have been around for millenia, and have some basis, but people KNOW that scientology was just made-up. How can people believe in its tenets?

Im an ex-scientologist.
Nothing about scientology was "made up". The course material, and the tenents was researched by a scifi writer (they all tend to be good researchers). Its all self-help stuff that was not as common back in the 1950s as it is now.

The weird religion stuff that people post here about it is crap. In the two years I hung out there I didnt see or hear any of the alien stuff people post. But then they explain that as "secret stuff known only at the top"

Scientology believes in God, but not in using prayer or believing in miracles or "giving yourself over to God for guidance". They offer good courses. I took the Personal Communications and the Better Studying courses and they were excellent.

Same reason people decide not to follow Jesus.

It's easy to believe what you want to believe. From the outlook Scientology might seem hard with all their rules, but it's a pretty much self-focused religion as far as i'm aware. That probably works for most people.

and i agree, it's pretty obvious it was made up!

There are lots of examples where new religions show up and get strong followers.

Every hear of Charlie Manson? He convinced his "family" that he was a messiah and got them to commit murders in order to start a race war.

How about Heaven's Gate. They committed mass suicide because they became convinced that there was a UFO inside the comet Hale-Bopp when it was near Earth. They were convinced that if they "shed their containers" they would be picked up by it and carried to a distant planet.

People will believe all kinds of weird crap. Don't dwell on it to much.

Let's see.....
A bunch of self-help courses researched (stolen from many sources) by a scifi writer.
Or the religion brought down off the mountain to a bunch of goat herders.
Or the religion made up by a zombie magic carpenter who said that anyone who breaks the rules can get to heaven by praying to God through him.
