Because Brazil is in South America. Where most of the countries over there speaks Spanish. Most Americans, don't
realize that Brazil, was once a Portugal colony.

Well, I'm gonna try to give you an answer, but your question has appeared to have turned into a forum for people to come and spout off about how stupid and ignorant Americans are. Not sure that was your intention all along, but that's what it's turned into.

Being a stupid, ignorant American, I'll attempt to explain.

Most Americans I know do in fact know that Portuguese is spoken in Brazil. They also know that most of South America speaks Spanish. Unfortunately Portuguese is not a prevalent language at all in the U.S., wheras Spanish is, in the U.S.

Most Americans can speak a tiny bit of Spanish. I think we assume that because your country borders several spanish speaking countries, perhaps you have knowledge of Spanish as well, much like we do. We're simply trying to communicate with you. It would be like if someone from Spain attempted to speak French to someone from Ontario, Canada. Neither is their native tongue, but odds are the Canadian will know a little French.

You understand? We're just trying to communicate by finding a common ground. If we knew Portuguese, we'd speak it to you!

Hi to you too, I don´t want to sound rude, but in my opinion many Americans lack the knowledge of the world outside U.S.A. I´m sorry, but that´s the impression I have got and if I´m wrong I apologize!

In Europe most people know that Portuguese is spoken in Brazil. That´s something you learn at school in most countries here.

Obrigada, sorry don´t know so much Portuguese, but I managed quite well with my Spanish, although that´s not my native language, when visiting Brazil some years ago. Just loved your country. Visited Rio, Manaus, Salvador. All the people were very friendly over there. Sorry, I´m a little out of line here, but just wanted you to know, how I felt about your native country.

Some people are used to the fact that South America is a mostly Spanish-speaking region, so in some cases, Brazil is pulled into the equation. One time, I was watching a show called The Amazing Race, and there were some Americans going around Brazil, and this one woman was saying things like "Mucho mas rapido" and "Gracias" to a cab driver! LOL

Well while I've never personally thought this myself I suppose most Americans assume that Brazilians speak Spanish because much of the rest of South America speaks Spanish. Also, Portuguese is not as commonly heard here in the U.S. in comparison to Spanish which we hear almost all the time.
Personally, I love Spanish and I love Portuguese as well. I study both of these languages and want to do interpretation in the future.
Tranquilo meu amigo. Nao todos nos pensamos assim mano. Rsrsrs.

I don't know if MOST Americans think that. But the ones who do might not be able to even tel you where NYC of LS is in a map of the United States.

And I wouldn't be surprised if those thinking Spanish is spoken in Brazil, after you tell them that is incorrect, will firmly believe you speak Brazilian (just in the same way they don't speak English. They speak American!).

Because they pay no attention in school. I am a teacher and that information is always taught again and again over the years, when we study the colonization of the Americas by the Spanish and Portuguese. Many Americans only focus on the presence of Spanish-speakers in the US from Latin American countries and forget that it is Latin America (more than one Latin language), Spanish America. It is not a poor educational system, it is the fault of poor students.
