Can someone explain to me stimulus-response behavior in animals? Examples please?

I mean, birds can't look in a mirror to know they're a cardinal let's say. Yet, cardinals always pair up with other cardinals, and robins with robins, and so on. They're not like dogs that just hook up with anything available, why is that?

Is it because they recognize the return of their unique call/song?

And don't just say "instinct", I feel that is just a cop-out answer for those who really have no clue, not to mention it is quite obvious that instinct is involved. I am looking for a logical answer here. Thanks!

Hoping you know from your own experience, maybe.

Would it be better to get them when a baby?

Maybe they would be better tempered if you got two as babies so they could keep each other company?

Maybe they are just plumb cranky, is that it?

Please tell me what *you* know about in which ways they are useful.

thank you
Lakshmi

I have been told they are not poisonous but can be aggressive and will bite. One has taken up residence outside my office door and I'm not happy at all. I have been told it is harmless but my research seems to say otherwise. I don't want it killed but rather just "rehomed". I'm in the Jacksonville, FL area and by looking at pictures it looks like a Northern Black racer as it is very dark and about 3' long.

The nests look long and their are a few connected to eachother. I remember breaking one open a year ago and found dead spiders in them. And the spiders didn't look like the same kind either. Why do they do this?

Consider fireworks Pets in general can't stand the sound of fireworks. We as human beings are just ignorant to there natural ability of fear towards the big bang. Are they born with this sense. Its happened before. We just forget.

In our garage in VA we have a little cluster (about 3 or 4) spiders that are exactly the same shape as a black widow but pale beige and slightly different markings. One actually managed to capture a huge - around 4 times as big as it- spider and slowly wrapped it. What type of spider can catch things so much bigger than itself in suburban VA? I thought they only went for things smaler than it. Worried if it can kill something much bigger than itself is it a danger to my little girls? No idea about ameican spiders as Im from the UK where the most deadly thing is a london taxi. Thanks

Iv been looking at doing voluntary work with animals an really find any good placements. Iv looked at places around where i live (Sheffield area) and not found much choice. Iv also looked at going to work abroad like in South Africa for two weeks and i was shocked to see how much these trips cost. Does anyone know of anywhere near Sheffield that would take on a volunteer or of a site that;s got cheap voluntary work abroad?

For example, does blood type matter or perhaps skin type or even fragrances or lotions? It has always baffled me how some people tend to get eaten alive while others don't even suffer a single bite . . . oh and this is primarily for mosquito bites.
