It depends on the species of hippo, but my guess is that you are just wondering about a normal old river hippo. If that is so, then hippo would win on both land and water. Something like a pygmy hippo would not have a chance against a rhino though.

Hippos are EXTREMELY aggressive, to the point that they kill more people in Africa per year than all other mammals combined. Their size is nothing but impressive, males can top out around 7000lbs where as male white rhinos top out around 6000lbs and a black top out around 3500lbs.

They are more or less two tanks fighting it out. Rhinos do have the horn advantage but the skin of the hippo can take massive damage and still throw a good fight. Hippos on the other hand have extremely large tusks, some which I have seen to be larger than rhino horns.

Part of the reason the fight is swung to hippos is that rhinos have very poor eye sight. And when you have a 5000lbs+ tank running at you, well ya kinda need to know where it is.

Both the horn of the rhino and tusks of the hippo will do a great deal of damage and unless one of them hits a vital point fast, chances are it will be one of those fights that go on and on until someone either gets tired, drops and is trampled... or if someone dies slowly from blood loss and stress.

Nonetheless, both land and water... fight goes to the hippo.

That depends on the enviornment. On land, hands down it would be the Rhino. The Hippo is much more versatile in an aquatic enviornment. The Rhino wouldn't stand a chance if confronted with a Hippo in body deep water. Incidently, a group of Hippos or Rhinos are called a "crash." Indeed if the two species ever tangled, there would be one hell of a crash.

On land, it's not impossible if a rhinoceros could topple the hippopotamus over and trample it, but in water, the hippopotamus could rip the rhinoceros to shreds with its teeth.

Rhinos win. They can pretty much do whatever they want. Anything that weighs several tons , runs 40+ MPH, and has a large a$$ horn on its head wins.
