I have been told they are not poisonous but can be aggressive and will bite. One has taken up residence outside my office door and I'm not happy at all. I have been told it is harmless but my research seems to say otherwise. I don't want it killed but rather just "rehomed". I'm in the Jacksonville, FL area and by looking at pictures it looks like a Northern Black racer as it is very dark and about 3' long.

Red touches yellow, you're a dead fellow. Red touches black, you're ok jack.

They are non-venomous.

Similar in appearance to the Black Rat Snake, but body is smaller in diameter, and a small white patch under the chin and along the throat instead of a white belly. It lives in brushy areas, rocky hillsides, and meadows, and underneath boards or tin around old buildings. Black Racers feed on insects, eggs, mice, frogs and lizards.

It is not aggressive and will quickly flee if you stand still, then slowly back away. However, if this snake is struck, cornered or captured, it will coil, rattle it's tail (bluff) and lunge at the intruder to defend itself.

the main thing to know is that the black racer won't harm anyone, it is non-venomous, and it will eat rats and mice (that may carry disease). you should let the black racer live. he won't eat any other snakes but he may also be an indigo who would eat other snakes and is also not dangerous to us. you should also educate your children on what to do around these snakes like stay clear. Most rattle snake victims have been bitten in the hand or arm. these snakes don't climb so the people who are bitten are likely to have been playing with or bothering the snake. or trying to kill it with a shovel or something like that. they won't just chase after you and bite you, you generally have to be asking for it for a snake to give you a venomous bite. they would much rather use the venom to catch food.

They are not poisonous and it won't attack you if you are just walking past.
They can move quickly and will sometimes hide under a rock or in a bush to escape.
They are one of the most aggresive non-poisonous snakes when handled by people and they will bite so do not let anyone try to catch it with their hands unless they have a lot of experience handling wild snakes.

Maybe you could post a question under Pets under yahoo answers and get more info from a snake expert.

Consider yourself blessed. You have nothing to fear from a Black Racer. All the unwanted rodents, frogs, lizards and anything it feeds upon better watch out. You might have happened to find one sunning its self, as they have to do this to warm up in the morning. This is a diurnal snake, daytime hunter and can get up to 5' long. If the snake slithers away pretty fast, then most likely a racer, but if it hesitates, it's most likely a Rat Snake. We have the northern version. I hear funny stories of them being outside of trailer windows hunting, and in green houses.

Black Racers are cool snakes.

k, that being said, they are not dangerous at all. In fact, they are quite beneficial as they will weed out all the vermin in the area.

However, do not try to handle it unless you know what you are doing. They do not hesitate to bite and can become quite aggressive when agitated.

By all means, leave it alone, it will not hurt you!!!!!!

Absolutely one of the good snakes to have around. Most of their food is rodents. They will not come after you but if you grab him he can give you a good bite or two very quickly. Not venomous. Give him and the yellow rat snake, which is also very commen in south Florida, a chance to do their job and your area will be rat and mouse free.
