Panthers can be black or a tan color. Jaguars are the ones that look kind of like leopards.

Panthers are really just black leopards, which are different from jaguars. Leopards live in the Old World, jaguars are New World. Also, some spots on a jaguar have a smaller black dot inside, while a leopard's spots doesn't.

A true panther is from Asia and is black. In North America a panther is really a couger. A jaguar is larger and either black or spotted. Both are found in the Americas but the jaguar is found from Mexico south thru Argentina.

Even though panther is a loosely applied term, at times referring to leopards, cougars or jaguars - generally black leopards are called panthers. Jaguars - even though some appear black too - are a different specie - more massive than leopards.

Panthers are leopards and are found in Africa and Asia. They come in two colour phases, yellow (the most common) and black. Jaguars are large cats from South and central America. They also come in yellow and black colour phases.
Some other big cats such as the north American cougar are sometimes (wrongly) called panthers.
