Hoping you know from your own experience, maybe.

Would it be better to get them when a baby?

Maybe they would be better tempered if you got two as babies so they could keep each other company?

Maybe they are just plumb cranky, is that it?

Please tell me what *you* know about in which ways they are useful.

thank you
Lakshmi

They are wonderful animals and really no different than any other hoofstock that is worked with on a regular basis. You have your pissed off camels and you have your just want some lovin camels.

Overall though I would not say bad tempered, they are more of a stubborn animal. Kinda how donkeys can be really stubborn at times.

If you own camels I would suggest having more than one since they do live in groups. That does not mean that it will change the temperment of the camel, even more so if they do not get along... it is just nicer for them to have company. I have also seen some people pair camels with other animals (all hoofstock) just so they are not alone.

Camels in the US really are not a big thing, mainly because there is no need for them. You cannot use them to plow for crops and there is no long dry cross country trips to use them for. In other regions of the world though they are used all the time, mainly because the camels can make pack trips that horses cannot. They are also used for meat in some areas.

In all honesty, I would not get one.

I currently work with four female camels, and have been around an additional three males and one female that are owned by a friend. their personalities are just like humans. some humans are just plain mean and cranky, and others are friendly and outgoing. right now, one of the girls i work with is very friendly and loves attention, and one is the exact opposite. she charges, chases, pins you against walls and has kicked a number of differnt people (including myself and i can tell you it hurts). And then the other two are somewhere in between. yes it is a good idea to have at least two because they are herd animals, however you have to make sure you are ready for such a commitment. they are a lot of work and can be very dangerous. I would think that getting them as youngsters would be better because they would learn you are dominant over them. If they don't learn that they will quite litterally walk all over you. Something else you should take into consideration should you be thinking about purchasing, which i am inclined to advise against, is the type of camel. Something my friend you owns and raises camels told me to do: look at your personal life. If you have more male friends than females and find you are better suited to hang out with males, than you should work with arabians (also called dromedaries or one humped camels). if you are the opposite and have more females than males, then you should consider being around bactrian.

As for spitting, while it is a threat, and let me tell you their breath is horrible, i have been around camels for near four years and I have never seen a camel spit, and have only heard about it happening with our camels once in that time. it happens, but it isn't as common as everyone thinks.

Also, i'm not sure that these animals would have much functionality in the United States unless you intent is to run a ride somewhere, and again i'm inclined to advise against, because i can tell, with all due respect, you are not ready for that just yet.
I hope this helps!

Camels are alright, I think they seem in a mood most of the time, just because of the way they look but I think they know how to have a laugh.

I went riding on a camel around the pyramids in Egypt not too long ago, his name was Charlie Brown and he could run damn fast. He seemed to be relatively happy to me but then I suppose that is what his owner would want us to believe. I would expect alot of them get miss treated so they probably would be miserable.

Coyote pretty much said it all except on thing.

They can be very stubborn.........

Can have a temper like any hooved animal like a horse, mule, donkey, etc. although a camels feet are much different than a horses.

However, they are very large, much larger than horses, and extremely strong.

Don't get one pissed at you.

Plus they spit...............

I think if I was a camel I'd be pretty annoyed too, I mean along with hippos, elephants and warthogs they are proof that if there is a God he has a great sense of humour.

That's serious maths. hehe

Camels if annoyed can crash people to the ground using their wide plate in their chest! So never touch them .
