I live in the Willamette Valley in Marion County, Oregon (Keizer, just north of Salem).

I took these pictures of this spider who had made a nest up inside my folded-patio-table-umbrella last night (about 0100 on May 31, 2007). She didn't care much for the flash and poked her head out of the inside of her nest to see what was going on!

Any idea what she might be? I checked a number of possibilities. Clearly not a hobo, doesn't seem like an orb weaver, I don't THINK she's a Wolf Spider - I think she was about 1/2" long...I'm too durn'd ignorant of spiders to even have a decent guess.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

i live in upstate NY, and today i saw a whole colony of brown-and-blue caterpillars near one big tree. they were coming down from the tree on silk strands, and as soon as they landed they started walking back toward the tree and up the trunk. why did they com down from the tree in the first place? and were they going up the tree just to find more food or to make their cocoons?

Who would win in a fight in neutral territory? Polar Bears are the largest land predators on Earth while the Elephant is the largest animal on Earth. If the two came to blows on neutral ground (one that doesn't favor any of the animals) who would win?

I mean really why do we waste hundred of thousands of dollars studying them and trying to breed them what purpose do they serve? They are the most useless animal in existence.

Giant pandas do not breed in the wild. There hasn't been a documented case of natural pregnancy in a giant panda in over 25 years. Could it be that pandas understand something about natural selection that we bleeding heart humans are ignoring? They are all bred in captivity now, and the ones that are returned to the wild are dead within a year. So why are we helping them? Isn't it possible that pandas were supposed to be extinct decades ago to make evolutionary room for some other species that we will never know until we stop interfering?
And I like pandas, so don't call me a hater. What I don't like is the hippie enviromentalists that think no species should go extinct, even when their survival is being forced in a lab.

My cat is terrified of something in the apartment and I can't figure out why he is afraid and a snake is the only thing I can think of. He is cautiously sniffing around with hair on his back up. He won't go near the kitchen. He growls. There is construction below. I asked this question in another form but this is specifically about snakes, other than pet snakes....?

There are small monkeys at my local Zoo that are housed on an island in a large lake. But I was wondering, can they swim, in which case why don't they and escape, or if they can't swim, which is likely, what happens if one of them falls in?
(it's too far from the land area for someone to rescue the monkey quick enough).
The monkeys are always dangling over the edge close to the water so it's only a matter of time before one slips and I am worried! :)
