My cat is terrified of something in the apartment and I can't figure out why he is afraid and a snake is the only thing I can think of. He is cautiously sniffing around with hair on his back up. He won't go near the kitchen. He growls. There is construction below. I asked this question in another form but this is specifically about snakes, other than pet snakes....?

More than likely, he's been "spooked" by sounds of the construction below that you mentioned. Cats are often afraid of the unknown, so he can hear these sounds, but has no idea what they're coming from. Other than the remote possibility of a Black Ratsnake coming in from somewhere, the only other snake-related possibility would be a pet snake from somewhere else in the building escaping and making its way inside, but I wouldn't count on that, either. A rat is another distinct possibility, since rats do get big and mean, and I've personally seen one really tear up a cat! Still, I would guess that some sound or odor from the construction site below is the cause of his anxiety. I wouldn't totally rule out a Ratsnake, since they live in Central Park, and they are very good climbers, but most cats are more likely to go after a snake than to be afraid of it. If you've carefully checked inside all the kitchen cabinets and whatnot, and behind the appliances, and haven't seen anything, then it's most likely the construction. Remember, cats can hear sounds that are beyond our range, and heavy equipment can produce such sounds.

What makes you think it is a snake? I'm sure that there are some snakes in Manhattan, but very few. It's probably something else. Personally, I like snakes.
