Zoology (Science & Mathematics) - May 2007

I am a teacher with a set of caterpillars in my classroom (they are contained in plastic vials). My question is - can you slow down the process of them forming their chrysalis? Ideally I would slow it down by three days or so as an important visitor will be coming to the classroom and they would be well impressed if they saw them in action.

I've always gotten huge black spiders in my house. But now, I am seeing a new type of spider and I can't...

...identify it. This spider that I am seeing is large, a bit bigger than a quarter (including the legs). The initial body is a reddish brown with matching legs. The back of the body has a black thing that kind of looks like a second body, but I think it might be a sack with eggs in it. I am concerned about it being poisonous, and curious about what it is. I am afraid to spray because I have kids and cats and don't want the poison in the house. I took a picture of it. In what way is a mosquito or a tick beneficial?

This is something I've ofter wondered. I suppose I could research it, but I thought I'd get your ideas. I mean, I know that there would be serious problems without flies, but what would happen to the ecosystem if mosquitos, ticks or even fleas, for that matter, would just disappear? Does anything specialize on these creatures? What good are they?

why are American crocodiles so rare in numbers in Florida compared with the American alligator?

there is apparently only 2,000 American crocs in Florida and an estimated one million alligators , what is the reason for this staggering difference, why do the alligators thrive so much more than the crocs?
