I came up with 17 & 7, but can't put it algebraically.

Let W be cows and H be chickens. Then W+H = 24, and 4W+2H = 62. This solves to W = 7 and H = 17.

Your question is incomplete. It presumes that all the cows have four legs and all the chickens have two. I have known many one-legged chickens although I think a three-legged cow would be a rarity.

10 cows thats 10X4 =40

let num of cows = x and num of cows = y.
x + y = 24 therefore y = 24 - x
4x + 2y = 62

substituting gives 4x + 2(24 - x) = 62
4x + 48 - 2x = 62
therefore 2x = 14
x = 7
y = 17
