"You can't be serious, Mother! Are you expecting me to go all the way over to America by myself?" I asked my mother.
"Emma Rose, please let me explain! You have heard what is over there! They say that the streets are paved with gold! Just thinking of it makes me want to go! And you will not be alone, either. Samantha and Charlotte will be going with you, too. It is our only hope for a better life," Mother told me.
"Mother, Samantha is only thirteen, and Charlotte is only six! I can't possibly take them with me! Ever since Father passed away last summer you have always been talking about getting a better life in America! Well look at us now! We are having a perfectly good life, just let me tell you. We have food on the table and clothes on our backs. I think that is just fine enough, if you ask me," I told her.
"Oh, Emma Rose, you know I would go, but ever since little Alice came I haven't been well. Please, Emma Rose, " Mother begged with pleading eyes.
