leave pack of cheep smokes laying around, make sure to put cig lights in them. if he is smoking near the house you Will hear them explode and I doubt he will want to smoke again. Cheep smokes will pop and the tip will blow. GPCs are the best. Winstons, marbrols, camels and such will just make a pooping sound.
You can also look through his stuff when hes not around. Kids need privacy but at the same time you have to keep tabs on them.
Sniffing cloths wont work he could have friends that smoke.
usually when kids smoke they will carry clone, gum, things to hide the smell. But again that's not a full proof, some boys carry that stuff just in case they end up talking to a girl.
The best way to know for sure would be snooping and talking.

Unfortunately in the world today, there are many ways you can catch your child smoking. Kids however, have learned the basic coverups. Just smelling their clothes and hair and breath may not work. Most kids do not know that if they smoke there is a residue left on their fingers. So, the next time you want to try to catch them, smell the fingers. Like the pad of their thumbs, and the insides of the pointer and middle fingers. Even if the kid washed their hands, there is a pungent smell still left for about a 8 hours. Check that. Good Luck and Happy Hunting.

You shouldn't have to catch him in the act in order to talk to your son about the dangers of smoking. Would it make sense to preach to your daughter about the dangers of sex after you've found out she pregnant or caught an STD? Open a conversation with him now, (no yelling). Find out what his thoughts are on the topic. Even if he knows already, tell him all the negative side effect and be specific: The cost, the smell, the diseases, the addiction, circulation issues (yes, down THERE). It helps if you and your spouse set an example of course by not smoking either.

If you think your 12 yr old is smoking why are you here asking us? You need to confront this right now. If you suspect it what are your reasons for that? If you don't smoke and smell smoke on the child's clothing then talk to the child. That's the only way to handle it.

Well smelling the clothes isnt really the best thing, he/she might have friends who smoke. He/she might be smarter then to smoke. Is there signs that he/she is smoking?
Just walk in his/her room one day, and dont snoop through his/her stuff, but just look.Sometimes teenagers just rhow stuff out of their pockets onto a desk or something, you might find a lighter or something. But truthfully, the best thing would be for you to have an open discussion with him/her.
A good way to have this conversation would be to ask him/her if they are smoking. I know it sounds stupid, becuase he.she will say no. But this worked for my mom. Just guilt his/her way out of telling you the truth.Don't be naggy about it. But start off by asking if they smoke. If they say no, then tell them your proud becuase you know how peer pressure is. And tell them how they should never smoke because of the dangers.
And being twelve;he/she has a good chance of becoming addicted. The younger you are, the easier your body becomes addicted, becuase its still growing.
Good luck!

just make hints for like a week , like it smells like (whatever hes smoking) and mabey on wednesday say it again. Then clean his room while he is at school, chances are hes hiding it in there. But if you clean it and dont find it then go to his school early and sit outside and watch what he does/where he goes. You cant confront him unless you have proof or you will come of as a jerk if he really isnt smoking..
good luck

don't bother to catch him just smell him, tell him he has been seen, tell him all the reasons for not smoking, if he don't listen stop his pocket money , then go on the Internet and find out as much as possible about lung cancer, and show him. take him to your local smoking clinic and let the doctor show him all the things they show about smoking, and all the drugs that are in cigarettes, like arsenic- formaldehyde, that should turn his guts, by the way if you smoke at hope don't bother you are already telling him it's ok. good luck..

I wouldnt suggest watching your child and spying on him because if he catches you, you will lose any kind of trust he has toward you. Sit him down and talk to him,
My parents compramised with me, They rather me smoke at home then instead of them not knowing and me trying to hide it and doing behind the shed at school and getting caught. If your son is doing this, whats more important, catching him in the act of coming to a compramise.
This is mainly a resort for popularity, peer pressure, deppression or stress TALKING is NEEDED.
If you are a smoker your self sit down with him and have one with him while talking to him about how smoking has effected your life. Worked for me and my parents. Give it a go, thats all you can do.

right when they come in from being out do not let them run upstairs to do the usual spray of deoderant.. get them in to talk to you and see how uncomfortable they get the closer you get. you will probably smell it.
you could always try offering them one for the whole look how disgusting it is trick and when they take a draw without coughing BINGO!
OR!.. you could be a nosy parent and check obvious places.. inside makeup bags.. schoolbags from years ago but if i was your child i would freak for that.
Im probably being a disgrace to all children 4 doing this but i wanted to answer a question i know something about =)
