"You can't be serious, Mother! Are you expecting me to go all the way over to America by myself?" I asked my mother.
"Emma Rose, please let me explain! You have heard what is over there! They say that the streets are paved with gold! Just thinking of it makes me want to go! And you will not be alone, either. Samantha and Charlotte will be going with you, too. It is our only hope for a better life," Mother told me.
"Mother, Samantha is only thirteen, and Charlotte is only six! I can't possibly take them with me! Ever since Father passed away last summer you have always been talking about getting a better life in America! Well look at us now! We are having a perfectly good life, just let me tell you. We have food on the table and clothes on our backs. I think that is just fine enough, if you ask me," I told her.
"Oh, Emma Rose, you know I would go, but ever since little Alice came I haven't been well. Please, Emma Rose, " Mother begged with pleading eyes.

"Alice will stay here until I am well enough to go over with her. She is only a year old. She still needs me," Mother said. I looked over at tiny Alice who was asleep in her tiny cradle in the corner. I didn't want to leave her. I was only fifteen, and my own mother wanted to send me an ocean away into a strange land that I have only heard of in fairytales.
“Mother, I am scared. I am afraid for you and Alice. You both cannot fend for yourselves. Not here, anyway. You know I’d feel much safer if you’d both go and live with Uncle Gerard and Aunt Betsy,” I told her.
Mother looked at me and said, “You sound exactly like your father, Emma Rose, and you look like him, too. As you see, I do not have enough money to buy tickets for Alice and I, and Alice is just too young to be sailing out in the unknown, anyway.”

They are leaving from a very poor city in England, and they are going alone to America but they meet a family on board the ship, and that is where she meets her new husband....and blah, blah, blah. It gets into detail a little more as the story goes on.

This really looks like it has potential. I wouldn't mind reading more if you wrote a book and got it published. Just be sure to come back on here and let us know! :D Good luck

This is a great story! I think it could use a little more detail, and if this is the beginning, they should start by letting us know who everyone is.

It is very well written and thought out. I just don't like the concept: where are they coming from? Who will they meet there? Etc. Love,
