My oldest daughter is 5 (almost 6) and in kindergarten. We have two younger daughters and a baby due in May. Our house isn't always tranquil but we have a large family and it's always happy. Lately she has started lying about small petty stuff, she cheats at games with her sisters, she throws temper tantrums, she threw a brush at her dad, her entire attitude has done a 180 and I don't know what to do. She's the oldest so she gets to do little things that the younger ones don't get to do because I want her to feel like being the big sister is fun. It just seems like all of a sudden she's not my daughter anymore, any suggestions?

My wife woke me up early this morning telling me that I would have to babysit my 9 year old nephew today (I usually sleep in late, so this has already been a disturbance to my day)

Anyways, I have him over this morning and of course I'm not exactly sure what to do for entertainment... I was telling him stories of my 'good old days' when I was his age and how we used to chuck snow and ice balls at cars passing by.

This morning, I took him outside (as part of his rites of passage into boy-hood) and showed him how to throw the snow and ice at cars and not get caught... (from behind the bushes, I demonsrated a few times) He REFUSED to do it, and started crying. I told him how all real men have done this in their life and the tears continued...I mean, this kid was hysterical

I took him back inside, where he is now watching television. I'm really concerned about him...what kind of kid cries like this??

My baby is 9 weeks old and eats as much as 40 ounces a day. She is not overweight, in fact, she's right in the middle as far as averages go. I hear all different opinions about when to start solids but I feel that at this point(since she's eating soo much formula) it would be ok to start her on solids. I know to start with cereal and then move on to jars of food, testing them one at a time as to avoid allergies. I just want opinions. Do you think it's too soon to start solids?

If you saw a parent give a ten year old a cigarette and a beer, the cops would arrest her. But obesity leads to very painful disease such as diabetes, mental trauma from being teased and low self esteem, heart disease, osteoarthritis, breast cancer in women, and ultimately death. But yet parents still load kids up with soda, candy, McDonalds etc. with very little mandatory exercise. The kids sit and can hardly breathe they are so heavy.

When I was a kid, there was one or two chubby kids in my school. Now they make up almost half the school.

A doctor recently said that we are literally poisoning our children. Should their be a consequance for the parents action????

What are the health risks for having a dog in your house and smoking when you have 8 wk old twins? I read that asthma is one of them and I assume that the babies can develop allergies from the pet dander and that the children are at risk of breathing in anything that the dog brings in. My cousin smoked all through her pregnancy and now smokes in the same room as her babies and now allows her dog (that she found as a stray) to stay in her house. I'd like to know the health risks that her babies are being exposed to.

to enforce.

I hear this a lot on these boards. For us, spanking is the most time consuming consequence I use. The whole process takes anywhere from a half hour, to an hour. The spanking it's self is very short, but the communication, before and after, make this consequence/punishment by far the most tedious. For example, if a spanking is given, they go to their room and wait for a few minutes, then we have a talk about why this is happening (5-10 min.). Next the spanking. Then we give them a while to calm down (10min.+-) After they are calm, we will spend at least 20 to 30 minutes having serious dialog/communication (not lecture, but back and forth communication) I have spent over an hour before just talking and listening after a spanking.

How is that LAZY!!!! Hard work if you ask me.

I find giving time outs, taking a toy away, or grounding to be more "lazy" then spanking. Not that I don't use those tactics too, I do, and they work for certain things.

Please don't think I am one of those parents who is competitive and over pushes her kids. I am not! I am sure that my son is behind the curve in many areas, and I couldn't care less. All kids progress differently and they are all OK. I AM JUST WONDERING if this is an above average skill for his age... My son is 10 months and gets extremely excited to read books. He seemingly never gets bored. He will want to change to a new book, but he never wants to stop reading. If given a choice between toys and books, he will paw through books and try to turn the pages. Last night he escaped from the bathroom where we were preparing for a bath, and he crawled as fast as his little legs would take him to the book area, not the toys. Is this typical for his age? Are all kids like this at this age? Is this a predictor that he will love books as a child, too? Were your kids like this and do they love books now? We didnt push books on him. We read to him at bed and it grew from there!

I've "felt pregnant" all month, but on Sunday I took a test and it was negative. (My period wasn't due for a few days) That same day,I developed cramps and started bleeding a little, but then Monday and part of Tuesday I had bleeding just like a normal period so I just thought that I had gotten it early. By Wednesday, my temp still hadn't dropped and I took a test and it was positive. My doc said that it might be a "false positive" and I should retest in a couple of days. I'm not content with that solution! I've had a miscarriage in the past, is it possible that I had another one, or could I still be pregnant?

I am pregnant and I want to have as little stretch marks as possible. I know that I am most likely going to have them. But I want to get coco butter lotion and use that so that if I do get them, they will be light. Is there any specific brand that works best? I am going to go buy it today after my doctor's appointment and I want to know if any brand is better than another.

They world our kids are growing up in is not a nice one these days. The news constantly has stories of abuse, neglect, abduction- I'm constantly terrified of something terrible happening to my kid. Does anyone else feel the same???

When I go shopping I am terrified to take my eyes off my little girl, when she goes swimming with her dad I run through a check list with him of how he must not take his eyes off her, take her in the changing rooms with him, go with her to the loo - basically never leave her alone!

It wasn't like this when I was young - do you think this will harm our kids in any way, us being so over-protective as parents...

What lengths do you go to to protect your child and do you feel that it is bordering on paranoia?

I ran out of liquid detergent to clean my babies bottles, I have to do it a few times a day or I would put in dishwasher. I was wondering if it is safe to use antibacterial liquid soap to clean them if I rinse really well. I can't take my baby out because it is so nasty out and he just got his shots yesterday.

I have a Graco 3-speed baby swing and the motor stopped working. At first, I thought it was the batteries, but I put new ones in and it still doesn't work. Are baby swing motors fixable or do I have to buy another one? The person I bought the swing from had just put a new motor in it and that was only about 4 months ago or less.
