Immigration - September 2007

[Selected]: All categories Politics & Government Immigration

Here in the Immigration category there's always some rabid nationalist saying horrible things and it makes me wonder if it's racism. I'm not an illegal immigrant but I know what it's like to be Latino and an immigrant. I also know people who are here illegally but who are good, hard-working people and the only law they broke was coming here illegally or overstaying their visa. It seems like "illegal immigrant" is the new homosexual or atheist in the United States. By this I mean how in the past people who were considered gay or heretic were despised and even burned at the stake. I don't understand. Even U.S. Citizens serial killers and pedophiles are not as hated now. Why all the demonization? It wasn't this bad before 9/11 and all the immigration issue debates on the news.

I bought a bird feeder. I hung it on my back porch and filled it with seed. What a beauty of a bird feeder it is as I filled it lovingly with seed. Within a week we had hundreds of birds taking advantage of the continuous flow of free and easily accessible food.
But then the birds started building nests in the boards of the patio, above the table, and next to the barbecue.
Then came the poop. It was everywhere: on the patio tile, the chairs, the table...everywhere!
Then some of the birds turned mean. They would dive bomb me and try to peck me even though I had fed them out of my own pocket.
And other birds were boisterous and loud. They sat on the feeder and squawked and screamed at all hours of the day and night and demanded that I fill it when it got low on food.
After a while, I couldn't even sit on my own back porch anymore. So I took down the bird feeder and in three days the birds were gone. I cleaned up their mess and took down the many nests they had built all over the patio.Soon, the back yard was like it used to be...quiet, serene and no one demanding their rights to a free meal.
Now let's see..... our government gives out free food, subsidized housing, free medical care, and free education and allows anyone born here to be an automatic citizen.
Then the illegal came by the tens of thousands. Suddenly our taxes went up to pay for free services; small apartments are housing 5 families; you have to wait 6 hours to be seen by an emergency room doctor; your child's 2nd grade class is behind other schools because over half the class doesn't speak English. Corn Flakes now come in a bilingual box; I have to 'press one' to hear my bank talk to me in English, and people waving flags other than 'Old Glory' are squawking and screaming in the streets, demanding more rights and free liberties.
Just my opinion, but maybe it's time for the government to take down the bird feeder. If you agree, pass it on; if not, continue cleaning up the poop!

She keeps insisting that "having papers" means to become a naturalized U.S. citizen and I keep telling her no it means having a temporary work I.D, work visa or green card. I know this because I'm a permanent legal resident, but she keeps insisting that she's right!!!...She also claims that when an illegal immigrant marries a U.S. citizen they get automatic citizenship but I know for a fact that they only get legal resident status and that they can apply for citizenship after 3 years of having their green card. Can someone answer this so I can prove to her I'm right! Thanks.. LOL

I know this is a stupid question but I think the best way to help people in Mexico from their corrupted government is to make it part of the U.S.. There would be less overcrowding in California and other states, there would be less people starving, and we'll be a step closer to globalization. what do you think? Try not to be too cruel; there's only one race and that's the human race.

i cant believe that someone reported me because i support the dream act, for the people who dont know: The dream act is a bill that will allow student that are illegal immigrants to become legal. Kids who had no choice but to come here illegaly, I mean seriously did the US government and people expect them to stay in their country without their parents?? would that have been the best thing to do???. This kids speak english, have an education and want to go to college!

I cant believe how people can get so mad when their views are not shared by everyone.

Support the dream act!!!

Let's be real. In the US, the AVERAGE American is not going to do low-wage janitorial, agricultural or domestic work. When the bills are due and you have no other options, facing hard times we'll temporarily take whatever work we can get. In the past, I have too, but all the while l wanted out and to get a better job. I went to college and so did many of you. Those that don't usually have a trade or skill to get them their "ideal" job. Nothing wrong with any of this. It's the American Dream.

My question is, WHO do we REALLY expect to work in the so-called menial, agricultural, domestic positions?
Americans are hard-working people. We want to feed our families, but face it, it's hard to fill these positions and they don't pay a lot. The CEO of a company makes $100,000/yr while the janitor makes $18,000.

We could pay the janitor more, but then there's inflation and downsizing.

Serious answers and ideas, thanks.

I live in Texas and I am seeing more and more that Americans are becoming the minority in America. Now I'm not just talking about white people, this is not a race issue, there are plenty of hispanic Americans but the illegal immigrants, mostly from Mexico seem to be taking over the country! Now some will say that they do our "undesirable" jobs....ya they may mow the lawns or build the highways but I know some people that would love to have a JOB...undesireable even and they can't find them. There needs to be a better plan to dissuade illegal immigration, they are BREAKING THE LAW. They are eating up our resources, using up our tax money, taking jobs and affordable housing from hard working Americans (black, white, brown, yellow or otherwise) who are living in this country the legal way. Maybe we should all follow suit with the town in Texas that makes it a punishable crime to rent to and employ illegal immigrants. Its time to take our country back!

Did you know this? That since they have failed to pass comprehensive immigration reform cause the american people were so much against it...that the pro amnesty lawmakers are now trying to sneak it bits and parts of it as part of other really important pieces of legislation like military funding bills etc...that must be passed urgently. It is important that you do not sit by and let them get away with this. Call and write your lawmakers just as aggressively to let them know you will not stand for any amnesty of any sort and no guest workers of any sort. Plus complain about foreign truck drivers being allowed to drive in USA and bring loads from Mexico and Canada.

NEVER GIVE UP !!!!

Do you think there will be a rise in the need for ESL (English as Second Language) teachers?

Not interested right now in the politics as to whether or not they should be here. My question is just to see if there will be a rise in this career for those here that need to learn English and American culture.

Selena was called the Mexican Madonna , loved by both Americans and Mexicans alike , she was an icon and I believe a diva of her time . However this is the last person Mexicans and Americans both loved . Blacks for example have musical talent , Americans got over the racial and hatred barrier because of this . I believe Mexican's need another Selena one they and the American people can love together and its only then { when a Mexican makes it big again } can the " border " issue be solved and I believe people would look at this situation totally different . Anyone agree ?

Side Note - Alberto Gonzales is not a good example that Mexicans and Americans like together , George Lopez is not as well however he is a man I enjoy yet he has not yet broken any barriers in terms of culture and Shakira is not Mexican she is Colombian pop star .
