Or About Dang time??
HOUSTON — The Houston Police Department has announced that it will work more closely with federal officials to identify illegal immigrants involved in crimes. Under the policy announced Sunday, police will ask all arrested suspects whether they are citizens. Anyone without identification will be fingerprinted and their criminal histories checked in a national database.

Officers are still barred from asking people who aren’t under arrest about their immigration status, a restriction that has prompted critics to denounce Houston as a “sanctuary city” for illegal immigrants.

But city officials said the new policy will help identify and remove violent criminals from Houston’s streets.

“(We are) specifically targeting those people that have been convicted of felonies in this country and have been previously deported and re-entered the country,” Police Chief Harold Hurtt said.

Under the new policy, police will hold suspects for immigration officials if a background search shows that the suspect is accused of returning to the country after being deported for a crime or defying an order to leave the country.

Those who cannot provide proper identification but have no criminal record will not be turned over to immigration officials.

Prior to the new policy, police generally did not hold anyone for immigration authorities, even if there were outstanding federal warrants.

“If the city restricts, in any way, a police officer’s ability to identify foreign nationals, it risks the possibility of losing all federal law enforcement grants,” said U.S. Rep. John Culberson, R-Houston.

Culberson introduced an amendment to the House appropriations bill that blocks federal grants to any city that restricts officials from exchanging information with federal immigration authorities. The bill has not yet been signed into law.

Local officials have said the city has no such restrictions.

Councilman Michael Berry said the change will “remove a number of violent criminals from streets.”

“You can’t know which lives will be saved because of it, but some lives will be saved,” he said. “And there will come a day when we ask for more, but, for now, we need to celebrate some progress.”

If we ask all those people that hate illegal immigrants to get their trailers out of the park and line them all up along the border that way we don't have to spend all that money on a wall that will not work.

I think that would stop a lot of the non-sense that goes on in america with teachers having to be biligual and workers and etc. What do you think? You dont see Hindi people coming to america and creating a demand for us to learn their language and what makes hispanics so special that we all need to learn spanish? By the way not trying to sound racist its just a question so dont go saying I must be a part of the black panthers or whatever, its just a question! And if the question has been asked before I apologize I guess its just an easy two points for you to sa the same thing over again

my bro-n-law (married to my sister-US citizen) has served his time in prison (3 years) for a DUI with Bodily Injury to Other (the other person did not die). He is Brazilian/English, born in Brazil, his family moved to England when he was a baby and to the US when he was 2. He does not know the language nor has any family in Brazil but was ordered to be deported today by the judge. It will take a few months for him to actually be moved, meanwhile he sits in the county jail. Does anyone know of someone with a similar case who maybe had a good attorney and got out of it? I feel really bad for my sister and my niece (5 yrs. old) and wish there was something I could do. Any advice?

I saw a muslim MP on TV last night , she was condemning Jack Straw, she was wearing Jewels, nice red jacket no head scarf or veil in sight, very westenised (if you want to use that term) then I saw another woman speaking about the Jack Straw saga and she was wearing a headscarf! What is the requirement from the Muslim religion concerning women and veils/scarves?

I do know the 200million or whatever it is, is an estimate but how did they come to this estimation. I mean if they are undocumented that means there is no record of them. Is the government trying to throw this enormous number out there to grab our attention or what. If they have some sort of estimate then I believe they must be documented somewhere, but I may be wrong. I may sound un-intelligent but I was just wondering and I am sure someone else out there has wondered the same thing!

I am completely baffled by this whole immigration thing going on right now. I welcome any immigrant that comes over here legally.. yes America is a country of immigrants... but legal ones. I am baffled that American citizens after 9-11 seem to just want us to open our doors to anyone to come in. Any country for their safety need to have a policy how people come. If they are legal they are welcome but need to go through the right channels for OUR own safety. If they are not here legally they need to be transported back home until they can come over here legally. I mean it's not like we have the most stregant policies on people coming over here. Am I wrong in this.. because it sure seems like more Americans want an open door policy then don't.

Hola.
When people refer to the U.S.A. as a Culture. That culture is rooted on several other cultures, like the Mormons, the Jews, the Pilgrims, The Dutch, the Germans, the Italians, the Rusians,,,( you name it).
But in the SouthWest were also the Germans, the Portuguese, the Russians, the Armenians, the Irish, the Mexicans, the Spanish colonization was a melting pot as well.
If you hate indigenous people, or poor people , just say it... But don't mix concepts like Mexican ( Nation ) with racial, ethnic or other issues that are politically incorrect.
Ciao.

a illegal from any other country should only be paid the wages equal to what they would make back in their own country,
- Do you then think that the illegals would stop coming or
- Would they still come in the same numbers as now because they can take advantage of the other services such as welfare, hospitals etc etc thus meaning the primary idea to be here is to get the FREE things while breaking the law.............
Your thoughts and opinions please..........
