I do know the 200million or whatever it is, is an estimate but how did they come to this estimation. I mean if they are undocumented that means there is no record of them. Is the government trying to throw this enormous number out there to grab our attention or what. If they have some sort of estimate then I believe they must be documented somewhere, but I may be wrong. I may sound un-intelligent but I was just wondering and I am sure someone else out there has wondered the same thing!

You count the number of lawns being mowed and the number of tables being cleared by busboys, the number of maids in hotels, the number of car washes (half that amount if it's brushless), and divide it by the number of available taxi cabs in New York. Then, multiply that number by exactly .7805 percent of the number of kids singing on the street with a mariachi band. And there you go.
Give or take a hot dog vendor or two.

Its just an intelligent guess based upon the number that are captured and sent back. And they probably factor in those numbers from past years as well. I wouldn't be surprised if they also factor in the number of dead bodies found in the desert, empty water bottles and so on. And, you have to figure that some bean counter who doesn't have a whole lot to do is out there counting the laborers in the lettuce fields and the like as well as how many are standing on the corner hoping to get picked up for a job in construction or something similar.
Then again, they might also ask the farmers how many they hired - and of course that answer is always, none.

The best we can do is the census every 10 years...and make estimates between censuses.
