Absolutely! It should be a requirement that to immigrate to this country, you can speak at least a minimal amount of English.
If I were to immigrate to Mexico, would I insist that they all speak and provide materials in English? Hell no. I'd better learn Espanol pronto!

I agree with you; America should have English as it's official language as it is habit for Americans to speak English as a common form of communications with one another.
I don't want to step anyone's toes on this one, especially concerning their personal thoughts on how they speak with others. However, the rest of the nation should not be bound to, or restricted by the interests of any small group or groups just because they came here without knowing the English language, yet while fully knowing that Americans are primarily an English-speaking group.

If we dont make English the official language, then eventually a bunch of spanish speakers who are too ******* lazy to learn english will start suing, trying to force signs to be bilingual for them.
Look at Canada. They have most signs in English and French. That is extra cost to the business owners, and that is passed along to the rest of society in higher prices.... all to apease some lazy people who won't give up and realize that France lost Quebec centuries ago.
Two languages is costly. Every brochure that the government has to print in multipule languages is a waste of money. If you come hear, learn the language. I would never go to Mexico and demand everyone cater to my English.... why should Mexicans and other people from Latin America expect different treatment?

I am a Chicana, my dad made it a point for us to always speak English as our first language while we were younger. All of my sibs understand Spanish, but can only speak English. Only a couple of us speak both.
I believe if you are here after a certain amount of time you should speak English - it maybe a bit broken but at least you are trying to communicate with us in our language.
So, yes I am for English being the U.S. primary language.

First of all, being able to speak more than one language is an asset - it engages the brain more, and gives you another way to think about things. I think that's what really scares a lot of people.
Secondly, the Spanish issue really comes about because of the sheer number of Spanish speakers immigrating - and by their proximity (physical and via telecommunications) with their homelands. A similar thing happened (to a much smaller extent) with French-Canadian immigrants from 1840-1930; some neighborhoods in New England kept speaking French well into the late 20th century. But Spanish-speakers are perhaps the first ethnicity since the British who haven't needed to lose their language.
Why fear the spanish language? English is still the dominant language of the nation and the world.

I believe a few month ago they did make english our primary language. the only thing bush has done to benefit our country in the past six years. we will always have immigrants here as everyone knows, but if we can get the Republicans out and the Democrats in we might have a fighting chance on immigration.

I think English should def. be the primary language, I mean we dont go to other countrys (like Mexico) and tell them they have to speak English in there own country, so why should we have to comprimise for them when they came to our country, apparently you liked it before you came here why should we change it now that you are here, it doesnt make any sense, Great ?

What do you mean a primary language?, I don't think people don't really like learn eanglish but its difficult to learn it if you live in a place where there are people that don't speak it (Hispanics for example). Anyway maybe after one or two generations they will learn it.
