I saw a muslim MP on TV last night , she was condemning Jack Straw, she was wearing Jewels, nice red jacket no head scarf or veil in sight, very westenised (if you want to use that term) then I saw another woman speaking about the Jack Straw saga and she was wearing a headscarf! What is the requirement from the Muslim religion concerning women and veils/scarves?

Perhaps the most distinctive (and for some, controversial) aspect as far as women's appearance is concerned is the requirement for hijab. This is covering up the body in public so that only the face and hands are visible. Only the women's husband and those who are mahram (forbidden to marry her - other women, and immediate male family members such as parents, brothers and sons) are allowed to see her without hijab.

The whole point of hijab is to protect a woman's modesty. Therefore, her clothes should not be tight so as to reveal the shape of the body, nor should it be transparent or in any way see-through.

A lot of muslim women, mainly from arab countries, wear a veil completely covering the face and gloves covering the hands and forearms (niqab). Some muslims regard this as obligatory, whereas most see this as a matter of choice.

If you'd like an answer from the Muslim Women's League, and good explanation of the veil and its various interpretations and uses, please check the following article, which includes the following in their conclusion paragraph:

"Choosing to dress modestly, including wearing a head scarf, should be as respected as choosing not to cover. Accusations that modestly dressed Muslim women are caving in to male-dominated understandings of Islam neglect the reality that most Muslim women who cover by choice do so out of subservience to God, not to any human being."

It is a personal religious choice. Just like in other religions, people choose to follow some religious laws and ignore others.

the women that are made to wear the Vail usually live under traditional Islamic law, or they are forced to do so by the mullahs that dictate Muslim law in the area that they live in. the ones that don't, live a more western life style with more freedoms not to say that they are not traditional just that they enjoy more freedoms they are not as oppressed as some others are.

just making a statement!! what annoys me is that if you visit a foreign country, you have to respect their way of life, covering up etc, they come here with no respect for our way of life, i find it very intimadating seeing just a pair of eyes!! we have the nerve to ban people wearing hoods, as they are seen as a threat!! we are slowly having our rights stripped away and nobody seems to be bothered, until we end up a muslim state!!!

Because Islam is a wide spreaded religion ... and involves different cultures and traditions.
