After prison, a criminal has "paid his debt to society". The punishment must fit the crime.
But why must the crime be committed before the punishment? It seems unreasonable. If I think I am going to commit a crime in future, I should be able to plan ahead and go to jail now before committing the crime. I am flexible about dates of being in chokey. They could lock me up when they had space.
Some think criminals are scum. After time they are viewed as a bit of a tosser, deserving a second chance. The act of punishment improves their standing from scum to a bit of a tosser. Time in jail makes one more popular.
I could carry proof that I had done time in case I was actually arrested for something. I reckon a few years advanced bird should be sufficient tariff to start a drunken punch up in the pub, get arrested for gbh and freed when I showed proof of advanced punishment. I would then be able to go back into the pub in time to laugh at my victim getting carted off to hospital.
