Ambivalance. I think of oppressive political institutions,
i.e. Kings, oligarchies, juntas, facism, police, on down to geo political entities, Warsaw pact, Nato, the Ottoman Empire, Byzantines, Romans, Caliphates, or groups like the Mongols, Napoleon, Stalin, or the State in general.
Also courts as machines that follow the law.
The Spanish Inquisition, NKVD, KGB, GESTAPO, The Third Riech, or the Committe of Public Safety under Robes Pierre during the Terror in France, and certain Roman Emperors: Julius Caesar, Tiberious, Claudius, Caligulea, Trajan, Hadrian, Augustus...
And then there is moral authority: Desmond Tutu, Ghandi,
I think of autocrats such as Peter the Great, Louis the XIV, Kiaser Welhelm the II, Elizabeth the Ist, or a number of Chinese emperors.
or the one time power of the Papacy in Rome, or at one time the Jesuits in shaping the minds of European aristocacy.
Or the British Navy during the 19th through the early 20th.
Or the constable writing my parking ticket.
