After prison, a criminal has "paid his debt to society". The punishment must fit the crime.

But why must the crime be committed before the punishment? It seems unreasonable. If I think I am going to commit a crime in future, I should be able to plan ahead and go to jail now before committing the crime. I am flexible about dates of being in chokey. They could lock me up when they had space.

Some think criminals are scum. After time they are viewed as a bit of a tosser, deserving a second chance. The act of punishment improves their standing from scum to a bit of a tosser. Time in jail makes one more popular.

I could carry proof that I had done time in case I was actually arrested for something. I reckon a few years advanced bird should be sufficient tariff to start a drunken punch up in the pub, get arrested for gbh and freed when I showed proof of advanced punishment. I would then be able to go back into the pub in time to laugh at my victim getting carted off to hospital.

YES! that would be brill, you could do like 25 years, and then randomly execute the next toss pot that comes in to your home selling double glazing! Or you could run over 5 people dead while pissed for the same amount. YES!! Like a crime isa or something.

You are funny.

Lets say you and a friend conspire to commit a crime . ie kill some body .for conspiring you will go to prison .even though you had not committed the crime ..in this case conspiracy on it's own is a crime and has a penalty of custodial sentence prison at the end of it..

not every body in prison or who been to prison are scum.
or tossers .the only people who thinks they are, are the ones who are a tossers

I have to assume by the total idiocy of this question that you plan to be a politician when you grow up. There is no such thing as pre-emptive time served in case of a crime and if there was, you would have to specify which crime you were going to commit so the time served would be appropriate.

because of the fact marriage isnt consistent with how nicely you persevere with the regulations?? Its no longer a reward for being a good citizen. one component has no longer something to do with yet another. you're comparing apples and soda. Its the starting to be a member of of a guy and woman. Thats what that's. The starting to be a member of of two of an identical intercourse is a civil union. (or could be) You cant say that because of the fact people have completed jacked up issues in life they dont get to get married. yet you in addition to mght cant use that as clarification that 2 ppl who dont greater healthful into the definition of marriage are owed it because of the fact 2 immediately people screw up. Its merely....undesirable good judgment. ------------------------ i like what Seeker of holy God noted: "people can no longer marry their close family members the two nor can people marry some one under age nor can they be married to greater desirable than one better half." there is greater in touch with marriage than merely 2 consenting adults.

No.

Prison is about rehabilitaion as well as punishment. The idea of being in prison is that both, the punishment and the rehabilitation prevents you from going on to offend.

In the examples you give above, the aim of prison is to prevent those examples from taking place.

this is a rather different question but i'm glad someone asked it. i think it should be up to the person whether or not they want to go or just be convicted. i agree people see the word felon on your record and tend to decline your job application and don't even care when or what the circumstances where or what you did. you did your crime and did your time, you moved on, so they should give you a shot and let you prove yourself. hope this answers your question.

Clever! If you did the time & then didn't commit any crimes, you might be able to leave your 'credit' account to your next-of-kin in your Will.
