"WASHINGTON -- A "perfect storm" of falling literacy, the changing structure of the economy and rapid immigration threatens to sharply cut US competitiveness and lower living standards, according to a report released Wednesday.

"Unless we do something about it, this society could be swamped," said Kurt Landgraf, Educational Testing Service president."

He cited lower school successes, globalization increasing the divide between the educated and not educated, and mass immigration of poor, uneducated people.

Every idea I throw out there I get negative response about how it will never work, well I need something to work. I was going 131 km's in a 100 zone in Manitoba Canada. The fine is 250$ and I get 2 demerits. I'm not too worried about the demerits, it the fine I don't want to pay. I have no good reason to have been speeding other than I wasn't paying attention whatsoever because I did not realize I was going so fast. It wasn't my car it was a borrowed work car and the only excuses I can think of are that I had quit smoking the day before so my mind was all over the place, I had just come out of the doctors office and got stitches in my leg, and that it was a borrowed car so it felt way slower than with my piece of crap car, all 3 of which are true. I cannot afford 250$ as I just bought an old piece of crap house thats being fixed up. I need some good ideas. Please this is my first speeding ticket ever! I don't ever speed. Help please!!!!

In particular which part of the armed services should I join that will LEAST likely involve me having to see combat. Im there to get educated, not shot at by peasant Iraqis.

Also if I join, once Ive got my education sorted, how quickly can you leave the forces? I imagine there is some kind of minimum time period in which you have to stay in there.

always say that famous Ben Franklin quote about security and liberty, but they appear to not make the connection of their own hypocrisy of global warming? This is in reference to something a little older and out of news now, but I just recently saw it.

I don't remember who, though I believe it was Robert Novak. He insisted that the reason so many came up with the idea of global warming (saying it doesn't happen and is made up, this is his answer when asked why anyone would make it up), was because of money. "What would happen to 'The Weather Channel' ratings if we didn't believe in global warming?"

Now if he wants to believe in conspiracy, by all means. If many of you want to believe it is a conspiracy, it is your right to do so. But seriously, can he not come up with something better than the ratings for The Weather Channel as the reason? The only people who watch the weather channel are a couple of people in the morning to make sure they dress for the weather, and then a few old guys trying to have a decent nap.

As a side question if you believe it to be a conspiracy, what do you believe the reason to be?

By that I mean, are they able to see them as they fall down from the gunshot wound they inflicted? or is it all from a distance? I quite fancy joining the army, if only so I can look an Iraqi in the eye, and say to him 'Time to die, scumbag' and blow him right across the Euphrates .....

Also do you keep like a scoreboard, so you know how many 'kills' youve achieved? Because Im a pretty crack shot with my air rifle, Id be suprised if I didnt manage to wipe out at least a dozen insurgents during a tour.
