Nazi Germany did just that in World War II, and so your idea is not new. Unfortunately, it was these same violent people who had committed the most heinous atrocities and other horrendous war crimes.
You wouldn't prefer to have American soldiers tried for war crimes, would you?. You wouldn't intentionally mix bad apples a basket full of good ones..

This question seems to be made by a 10 year old kid! Are you assuming that there are no innocent people in Irak? what about all the people who live there? The only criminals were Saddam and his followers, not the entire country. Prisoners are not all violent, some are serving a sentence for crimes such as cyber-crime, tax evation, fraud, and so on, these people are not violent. The ones who commited violent crimes don't necessarily want to keep being violent. If somebody kills your family, wouldn't you be enraged and kill the person who did it? you'd go to jail for first degree murder, maybe second degree if you have a good lawyer, does that mean that you deserve to be sent to a place to be killed? or that you are a mindless beast that only wants to kill life? Street gang members are there for a reason, because it's their family! they don't feel a family at home or don't have a home at all, and they are forced to live on the street. The men and women serving in the armed forces have not been drafted, they joined the military on their own accord! if our chief of staff decided that the war in Irak is necessary, then it's their duty for their country to be there, wether the reasons are correct or not, it's the path the the chosed.

VIOLENT people generally cannot think in a logical way. The mind is unruly and they are prone to episodes of being out of control.
If they were asked by the recruiting staff 'why they wanted to join the Army for instance, and replied that they wanted to kill people !the staff would be obliged to turn down the applicant.
The training you receive through basic training and then infantry training and beyond makes the new soldier a member of a well oiled team of speciallists who consider their actions, then act.
Take a violent person into war and all you have are more problems.

Shelly ... This sounds good in theory, but it doesn't work this way. The military needs intelligent, disciplined people ... not "nut job" criminals who might even take shots at someone on the same side.

Yes this is a great idea, people that could not abide by the rules to start with, give them guns and grenades and turn them loose. Would you want to be their commanding officer and go to war with that crowd. Not to good of an idea!!

there are innocent people in war zones... they are called civilians. You need military personnel with high moral character, good judgment, and self control. Your "prisoners and street gang fighters" don't have those as shown by how you classified them.

Because who fairly determines who should go? What if you were wrongly accused and punished for a crime and they shipped you off to Iraq? What determines what is violent enough?

Who would train/lead these half wits? Would YOU want to have your life depend on some inbred STREET THUG/DRUG DEALER/MURDERER/RAPIST/HOP HEAD? I think not! Those idiots only care about one thing: THEM SELF! Leave them to rot in jail where they belong!
