ZANZIBAR, Tanzania, Dec. 21 — The transitional government of Somalia, which for several months had been rapidly losing territory to Somalia’s growing Islamist movement, claimed victory on Thursday in the first major confrontation between the sides.

“We have overrun their troops,” said Abdirizak Adam Hassan, chief of staff for the transitional president, Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed.

United Nations officials confirmed heavy Islamist casualties in the fighting, which began Wednesday and continued Thursday.

The Islamist fighters — many of them lightly armed teenage boys, the officials said — were mowed down by transitional government soldiers backed by the Ethiopian Army, the most powerful military in the region.

“The Islamists attacked, they retreated and then they made the mistake of running into an open field,” a United Nations official said on the condition of anonymity. “After that, it was one shot, one kill.”

United Nations officials estimated that dozens of Islamists had died. The Islamists denied suffering humiliating defeats. On Thursday, the Islamist clerics who rule Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital, ordered schools closed so more children could be sent to the front lines.

After initially playing down the fighting, Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys, the leader of the Islamist forces, announced Thursday over national radio that Somalia was at war and said, “All Somalis should take part in this struggle against Ethiopia.”

i hear liberal liars say that the republicans lost "bad" in the elections. in fact, 18 house seats were decided by 5000 votes or less. In the majority of the house seats the libs picked candidates who were Christian, pro Iraq, and against big govt while being anti-illegal immigration. In other words, they pretended to be republican. Heath Schuller in NC is an example but there are dozens of others. With the moderate republicans mostly losing, and these psuedo republican dems winning, the American people have elected a conservative pro defense messege again. the libs are so stupid that they have not figure that out yet?

More specifically, is it relevant in a domestic murder trial? A friend and I argued its relevancy throughout all of English class today. I personally believe that whether it should be relevant or not is an entirely different, relative notion. Nonetheless, denying its relevance is witholding information. Fearing prejudice and compulsive decisions based on any given information is bigotry all in its own. I believe that although a person's environment, upbringing, and domestic life must be taken into consideration, it should not bear much weight seeing as moral credit must be given according to the individual’s own merit.

I know people say this and that about each one and that Conservatives are more Republican and Liberals are more Democrat but exactly what is a Liberal and what is a Conservative? I would like to have answers that arent trying to bash the other parties in this question; I just want a real answer.

They appear to be a secret group supposedly finding links to terrorists before 9/11 and they were dismissed...Are they just a group that had a small bit of info everyone is blowing out of proportion?

i think democrat or gop has little to do with the divide. 45% on left, 45% on right, 10% decide. maybe much less, really. most people know they don't know poop from shinola and they vote by tradition. the deciding group is hard to define. who are those guys?

I just read something about the similarities between Bush and Hitler, it did make me laugh because it is a little bit over the top to say that. But it said, Hitler was trying to liberate Russia from the evil dictator, Stalin, just like the stuation in Iraq, that kind of made me think. But overall the comparison was a little far fetched! I was just wondering if anybody else thought that the comparison was corrrect.

They are here because we U.S. citizens routinely break the law by hiring them to provide us with services and goods. And ignore the "mutuality illegality" of our relationship and just want to point the finger at them!

So how in the hell can we complain that they are here?

iraq is far from the chaotic place that the media portrays it,time and again soldiers and marines who come back from iraq are shocked to see that our media portrays the insurgents as winning but its far from the truth,for example our troops kill hundreds of insurgents everyday and the insurgency is getting weaker everyday,zarqawi is dead and alot of top insurgents are dead too.but best of all is that the majority of iraqis want the american troops to stay in iraq to liberate them from the disease of islamo fascists

as a american of mexican decent I have trouble getting white girls of irish decent to like me.. where I'm from i see a lot of mexican men with white women and hot ones too...

white women do you find mexican american men attractive and if so what do you like about them..?
