Conservatives prefer small government and low taxes, less government intervention, and are pro-business. Also fiscal responsibility and strong national security.
Liberal is usually about the redistriubtion of wealth, taking care of the underpriveledged. They prefer higher taxes on rich and a regulated business market, oppose free trade, and civil liberties and civil rights.
Neither party fits liberal and conservative perfectly. For example, the current Republican party isnt fiscally conservative while the Democratic party claims to be. The Republican party has also taken the liberal view on immigration while the Democrats have taken the conservative.
Parties cross over all the time. Personally, a mild mix of the two would be best.

The Liberal ideology is a theory which holds forth beliefs that have no basis in reality.
They are Advocates of a policy that empowers a strong government to enslave its people with a high tax burden incident to the support of extravagant and unnecessary social programs destructive to both the work ethic among the lower class, and the incentive to innovate and succeed among the working class.
The problems we face today are because the people who work for a living are outnumbered by those who vote for a living.
A democracy will continue to exist up until
the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous
gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority
always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from
the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally
collapse over loose fiscal policy

Bobby D has the right idea, but I'd like to expand a bit.
There are two kinds of liberal and conservative: There's socially liberal or conservative, and there's fiscally liberal or conservative.
The socially liberal or conservative are easier to define.
Liberals tend to be:
Pro same-sex marriage
Pro homosexual rights
Pro-Choice
Pro Affirmative Action
Pro Gun Control
Anti Welfare Reform
Conservatives tend to me:
Pro civil unions or anti same-sex marriage (depending on how conservative they are)
Equal rights for everyone, regardless of race, sex or orientation, but NO special rights
Anti-Abortion (the extent depends on how conservative a person is)
Anti Affirmative Action
Anti gun control (again, depends on how conservative a person is)
Pro Welfare Reform
As far as the environment goes, both conservatives AND liberals want to take care of it. They just have different ideas on how to go about this. (As a sidenote, I'm slightly more "liberal" when it comes to the environment.)
In all truth, the same goes for all issues.
Fact of the matter is, few people are a 1 (for ultra-liberal) or a 10 (for ultra-conservative) on a scale of one to ten. Most of us fall somewhere in between.

You really need to look at their platforms and what they advocate. Democrates (liberals) think that Government is the answer to all social problems and that government should help to resolve issues related to education, social reform, health and poverty. Republicans (consevatives0 believe in smaller government, individual responsibilty and individual freedom. There are other issues such as abortion, gay marriages, school prayer that also separate the two parties. Though many polititions are alike, there are differences that seperate them.

Liberals want to help poor and oppressed people, and they think the best way to help them is through government regulation, new laws, and giving away taxpayer money.
Conservatives also want to help poor and oppressed people, but they think the best way to do this is through private charities, churches, families helping each other, or helping yourself. Therefore Conservatives want lower taxes, so people have more money to give to private charities. Conservatives emphasize that charity is given voluntarily, but taxes are not paid by choice.
Conservatives are more likely to have old-fashioned ideas about morality, while Liberals are more likely to be free-thinking and modern about morality.

Short answer
Conservatives= every man for himself
Liberals= We are all in this together
A Conservative will believe that the human is ultimately bad and needs restraining while the Liberal believes that humans are ultimately good and just needs good opportunities. The Conservative relies on a father figures, leader, king, decider, protectionist for order while the Liberal relies on community, country, group, us, Representatives, for order.

I go by the dictionary definition of both terms. That makes me a liberal.People say it like it's an offensive label,I don't see it that way. Both groups have their extreme fanatics, and fanatics never make any real sense.

They are just stupid & insulting labels some people place on their opponents even if not true. Very few peple are all liberal or all conservative, they're mostly centrists leaning in one or the other direction. There's no black & white, just different shades of grey.
