I'm asking this not because I believe that sex offenders should be registered but because I'm wondering why sex offenders have been singled out when other crimes have far higher recidivism rates. Registries exist in some states for drug offenders, arsonists and others. However, none, as far as I know, are listed on the Internet.
I am concerned about these registries for their potential to create vigilantes and to punish the innocent family members of the offenders and the offenders themselves long after they've paid their debt to society. I am also worried about the constitutionality of these registries. The U.S. Constitution expressly forbids ex post facto (after the fact) punishment, and some members of the public are vigilantes.
Should registries for drunk drivers, especially those who kill and maim, murderers, thieves, domestic abusers, drug dealers, bank robbers, etc. be placed on the internet?
