Well yesterday I got a 3 month old albino rat named Kaiser (pronounced Kye-Zer)

I know you are supposed to get a rat from a good breeder or trusted pet store where they are handled daily, but I didn't know the conditions until I arrived.

The entire store is very cool and clean, and the rat cage was also very clean, but there were far too many rats in that one cage for it's size. I doubt they were handled often or possibly, got exercise, or possibly were underfed. Once I got there, I didn't want to be rude, and immediately connected with this rat, therefore deciding to buy it.

It has no problem however with being handled, it in fact clings to me, cuddles in my lap, and rides around on my shoulder. However, the poor thing has almost no muscle mass or any sense of fun whatsoever.

He almost seems to resist fun of any sort.

Will he warm up to this new concept of "fun", and what types of things can i do to help him?

They need to be cleaned often and the pet shop bedding works out expensive. Considering shredded newspaper, leaves or sawdust from the timber yard. I would like to compost the used bedding for the garden as well. Any ideas anyone?

I live in an apartment. there are 3 air vents for the levels in the apartment bulding. We live on the second level. We have squirrles that have gotten in our air vet for our level. They run around, thump and scratch. I was wondering if this was a serious problem. I was also wondering they must be going to the bathroom up there. can these things pose a problem? We have told our bulding manager about it but they havent done nothing about it. what should we do. the squirrles keep me up at night.

It's not the bottle because I have bought her a new one - same problem. It soaks the shavings inside, and therefore empties within just over half a day. How can I prevent the bottle from dripping? Thank you.

What does he eat? How do I take care of him? It pissed on me today, any way I can prevent that from happening?

I was reading about them on Wikipedia, and then came across the 'Fancy Rat' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fancy_rat) which looks 100% like a Mouse.

So, what's the difference?

My pig has gotten quite sharp nails, and they are long.

Are her long nails painful? I don't know what to cut them with.

If I do cut them, will she be in any pain?

Ever since I got my hamsters, I've been slowly weening them off of dry hamster food to a fresh fruit and vegetable diet. I've finally got them to the point where they now only eat fresh fruits and vegetables, [( I slowly introduced the new foods to them instead of just giving them a brand new diet so they wouldn't get sick from such an abrupt change )] and they've been doing just fine with it- In fact, towards the end of the changing process, they would only eat the fruits and just stuffed the dry food into the little corners of their cage!

Since they do fine with fruits and vegetables, I was wondering if they could eat tea leaves? Oolong, specifically. My little brother fed a leaf to one of the hamsters, and he ate it, and he hasn't been showing any signs of illness....

Hey there,
So i just got a new rat last night, and his name is Gideon.
When i was holding him at the petstore, it looked like he had a little bit of blood underneath his toenail. I didn't examine it further, because he was wiggly, and it just looked like he had maybe scratched his cagemate.
But tonight i was looking at it closer, and i noticed that it is actually ripped halfway off at the base. Like the entire thing is barely connected to the toe.
He squeaks when i try to pick him up too, is that because his toe hurts, or is he just still scared of me??
He walks normal and everything.
What should i do?? Is there anything i can do to help him?? Will it eventually fall off?? Will this cause any damage??

I have been to http://www.theagilerat.com/ But I do not have the stuff to make the stuff and how to teach it to my 1 year old rat and my 12 week old rat. Is my 1 ywar old rat too old? Or not? Please help me out. I have put "rat agility equipment" but people do not make it and sell it so I am kind of stuck on what to do. I am making a few things out of legos but it is not very sturdy. And they are both females.

I have three naked (hairless) rats -- 2 males and a female. I'm not *SO* concerned about the males, because they have each other to amuse themselves with and cuddle with.
The female's friend/roomate passed away about a week ago, and I am worried about keeping her warm and happy. I take her (well.. all of them, just don't bring the males out the same time I bring her out) out and give her attention when I have time to, but I feel that isn't enough. Is there any toys that she.. or all of them for that matter would like?

Same with keeping her warm.. I've tried putting an old t-shirt of mine in her box so she'd stay warm, and she dragged it out. What she has always done was put all the newspaper she has in the cage and puts it in the box, but I don't think newspapers would keep a hairless rat all that warm. It's cold outside and I'm sure she gets cold in her bedroom.. I know I do!

I have had one of my rats for quite some time now. A few months ago I got another, younger one. I have had them next to each other in seperate cages since I got them. I wanted to eventually wanted to move them in together. I have tried everyday for the past few weeks to start putting them together. Today, I got the smaller rat a new cage. She is able to fit through the bars and crawled into the other rats cage. They sniff around at each other and sometimes bite. But they will also groom each other and roll on their backs but the harmony never seems to last. Are they going to be okay together or should I keep them seperated?

I was thinking of either getting my new male dwarf hamster a habitrail safari, habitrail playground or, a plastic bin cage. What do you think is the best choice. Please include reason to your answer because i really want my hamster to have the best cage possible for him.

Please don't even mention getting him an aquarium 1 because i do not have the funds and 2 because it will be to heavy for me for when i clean his cage. All answers regarding me getting a glass aquarium WILL BE IGNORED!!

thnx in advance
