Give him a wrapped present, take a toilet paper tube fill it with tissues and small bits of rat food and then fold the ends closed then take a paper towel tube and stick the toilet paper tube inside it, then fill with paper towels and other paper products and fold the tube closed, then place the tube in a cardboard box and surround with more scraps of paper, you might even put several tubes in the box if its big enough and you want to.

Other fun toys include fresh pea pods, it doesn't take long for the rat to figure out how they work

And FYI rats can't use exercise balls, I don't know why exactly but they can't bend their necks at the right angle or something like that

Edit: And ignore bob s, cheese is not good for rats

okay, avoid the cheese since it can go bad very easily, and go easy on the yogurt drops because all it is for a rat is fat and sugar, which should be given only on great occasions.

my rats love the simplist things from a paper "lunch bag" randomly put in their cage for shredding, to little fruit snacks such as dried or fresh fruit

another thing though, is that many rats do not use those plastic balls, but i think that the play house is a great idea. for more toy ideas, i haven't found a place that's any better than this website http://www.dapper.com.au/toys.htm
enjoy!

and another thing about the exercise balls: since rats have poor eyesight, even in nature rats like to walk along walls more then out in the open so they can see whats in front and behind them better instead of being out in the open and seeing a huge "fog" around them (if you imagine seeing a few feet from your face and then seeing only blurs, you'd get what i'm saying). some rats can use them i suppose, but i'd spend your money elsewhere if i were you

Our rats love hammocks. If your guy doesn't have one yet, this would make a neat Christmas present. Even if he doesn't play with toys he might like 1 or 2 of those chew toys-treats made especially for rodents & available @ most pet shops. These come in so many different forms & flavors that I'd be really surprised if there aren't a couple kinds he'd like. Also, give him a nut inside the shell-- it's a toy & treat rolled into 1 & our rats love them.

What do they like? Do they play in rags or do they like any people treats? Just give them something from your heart, even if it is just some extra play time with you. My dog's Christmas present was no punishment today or tomorrow if he is bad. So far he has got 2 free passes (pottied in the living room & played in my clean laundry) and it is only morning.

I thought I was the only one that got my animals Chiristmas present! There are yogurt drops specially formulated for rats and some other sweet treats you can buy at your local pet store for about $7.
Hope this helps!

For my rat, I make her little sleep sacks out of fleece, she loves to hide in them and they're washable. Also we make fleece tubes, then sew a narrow piece of pvc pipe (a ring) into one or both ends, and she crawls through them, sleeps in them, and hides her treasures. They're washable, too. You can buy fleece remnants really cheap, and you can find plastic rings in the hardware/plumbing section of stores-they're pretty inexpensive, too.

Have you tried the Yogurt Drops? My rats LOVE the yogurt drops as treats... Like once a day or so. They go absolutely crazy for them!
